Tony Abbott is a practising roman catholic, and as such should be legally barred from holding any public office.

Agreed if your meaning that religion should not rule a democratic system which it may very well if Tony Abbot is elected.

Most everyone that has ever held office was of one religion or other and seeing the majority of anglo Australians are Christians it stands to reason they would also be in office....yet that hasn't stopped them from introducing, abortion, the pill, etc...it is more about popular opinion of the time..that is the guiding light in what a pollie usually does...ie gay marriage, Australians though favor it at about 60% is a vote changer if it was introduce today...but tomorrow who knows?

In an ideal democracy, any person claiming to believe in a supernatural entity ( i.e. god ) would be statute barred from holding any public office, and I don't mean only political office, I mean any position paid from the public purse. A " true believer " can never be trusted to act in a fair, just, logical and reasonable way. No matter what sort of barrow a true believer is pushing, he will always be pushing it in accordance with the perceived wishes of whichever green eyed little yellow god sits atop the wheel of the barrow. Allowing religion into politics will always result in bad government and bad god.
