Any country with resources is targeted by corporate energy companies to "get control of that resource" at any cost. Whitlam went outside of the traditionally used "finance providers" from English and US institutions , so he could get the finance at a cheaper rate , with no strings attached and have complete independance from all global controllers , and corporate manipulators .The powers-that-be were panicking , that Australia could stand alone ,on it's own feet, and make decision to benefit Australia ,and Australia's interests , without the interference of international manipulaters with vested interests. This period in Australia's history has far more implications today , than it did back then.....we still all want to "buy back the farm" , but the same corporate arsoles are still stopping us.....The way Abbott so vehemently opposed the first proposal for the mining super profits tax, in collusion with the giants of the mining industry , made my stomach turn , and he will never be forgiven.......it seems the political awareness of the right-wing experts on this forum where only born 2 years ago , and have some growing up to do........

did we have a choice? And we've been importing since the 70's from singapore so how is it howards fault?
We were told we were part of asian region for oil distribution so it was either singapore tapis or singapore tapis. Since 2000 we've been buying 10% of our oil from MENA, refined diesel from japan and buying less from singapore.
THIS is why... and Labour doesn't see this as a problem???
