Everything is relative and a car can only make your life easier if you have enough money to put fuel in it whilst still managing to pay your bills and buy your groceries.

Why is the singapore price of oil always more expensive than the USA price of oil? Why is biofuel priced at the cost of a barrel of oil & not what it costs to produce?

Get an electric car.
Golf buggies are not expensive.
A nuclear power station can make all the electricity.

Politicians will make these 3 things very difficult.

Why did a Liberal government and John Howard commit Australia forever to the Singapore price...

An electric car is not clean for the environment unless the electricity is generated by solar or wind power. Nuclear power is inherently risky (eg. Chernobly, Japanese tsunamis, terrorist threats, dumping of waste into the mediteranean sea by the mafia) and not terribly efficient when you factor in the huge task of disposing of the plutonium waste.

Hi Damian Auskosaurious... are you really that naive to think that the price of fuel only affects car users????

did we have a choice? And we've been importing since the 70's from singapore so how is it howards fault?

We were told we were part of asian region for oil distribution so it was either singapore tapis or singapore tapis. Since 2000 we've been buying 10% of our oil from MENA, refined diesel from japan and buying less from singapore.

Its the big global oil companies......Australia can produce more oil than it uses. But , the Libs tied us to world parity pricing so big oil could control all global oil everywhere(Aus...Middle -east....Nth Sea...Sth America...everywhere)its basically a world monopoly....This eventuated from the cartels of the Texas oil barons , who will do anything to keep control. Research both Bush administrations in the US , and you find out who installed them as presidents and why.Things were going smoothly for them ,until the Shah of Iran got exiled, and then the trouble started ,and continues today. They buy every bit of technology that threatens oil and shelve it.They invest heavily in anything than could replace it..including all viable bio-fuels and gas resources. They control the lot.

.........."The impact of global marketing decisions on national economies was perhaps most vividly demonstrated when oil price fixing in the late 1970s by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) sent shock waves around the world. The Fraser government’s 1978 decision to price local oil at world parity was in effect a new growth tax."..........with Howard as treasurer. Australia shouls be paying 50cents a litre, we produce , we refine and we distribute.......

Get off your labor horse d*ckhead. We're getting screwed by both sides here.

We only produce (at max production which we rarely achieve) 79% of our oil needs. But instead of importing 21% we sell our oil off everywhere - including $3b worth to China last year and import 80% of our needs. How does that make good economic sense. How do we do anything other than loose money selling oil to china then import what we sold?

Why can't I go to a local servo & buy B50 (50% biodiesel blend fuel). I'm told there are a few servos in WA that do. We could be heavy fuel self sufficient from biofuel so why is the government (irrespective of which party is in power) ever mentioned a plan to achieve a target. 100km from me is a site for a biofuel plant that passed all the hurdles 7 years ago but hasn't got 1 cent of funding to get it started.

And now the government (as in europe) as claiming biomass electricity as green energy. Cutting down old growth forrests & turning the woodchips into pellets to burn to create power. Doesn't seem green or enviro friendly to me. We have 2 such plants waiting final approval here in australia. Sweeden & Norway get 30% of their Green power this way.

Drop dead Chefboy..I ride any horse I want..(lol)....the fact is , the Libs have vested ideological interests in keeping this scam going..they are tied to that faction of US politics.....When Fraser put us under OPEC world parity , it denied Australia independance......if you do your homework around that period , you should know that Whitlam was in the process of borrowing $4 billion to invest in Aus resource industry , including the development of Australia's natural gas industry. So , we would have retained our own soveriegn oil industry, and pricing structure , and Aus natural gas reserves would have been public property ....can you imagine in the current world resource industry where Australia would be now?...think about it.For an interesting insight into the way the Libs are dominated by the corporate sector and for the corporate sector , research the Timor Leste connections between Howard , Woodside Petroleum , and other players in that market....its a similar scenario to what Fraser did to Australia .....people pay , corporates profit at all cost=economic rationalism.

I vaugely remember something about a lot of australian oil not being suitable for making fuel but suited for making lubricating oil but don't quote me on this.
