Australia, Indonesia try to help boat in distress

Australian and Indonesian rescuers are trying to help a migrant-filled boat taking on water in bad weather and rough seas off Indonesia on Wednesday, a day after the countries agreed to strengthen maritime ties as a way to combat people smuggling.

One different way to stop people smuggling would be for the population of Indonesia where the boats are coming from to be told of the drownings of their family members who's boats have sunk on the way to Christmas Island.

In the latest news I see this boat is continuing to push on toward Christmas Island, followed by an Australian warship.... Indicating how much control , Australia has lost of its borders, and how vigilant Indonesia is of stopping these boats, who are now being escorted to Australia... Evertime you read a paper Australians are losing their job, and to top it off politicians get a payrise today.... What a bloody mess this Government is making of this country...

If you didn't read the endless bullshit in the "newspapers" you would soon realise that things are not all that bad , so try dealing with fact instead of swallowing the fiction.

I am surprised the boat crews are using phones to ring for assistance so far out to sea where there shouldn't be in range

What a bunch of whingers. australia invaded Iraq & Afghanistan. Result, refugees. And not many either. what business is it of Indonesia? Not only are australians selfish but also foolish. Morons in fact. australia has invited the world's military mafia, USA, to set up a war-base in Darwin. Sure as eggs they soon be sending drones across to kill indonesians. Everywhere they go they do it. Today Indonesia is quiet & peaceful. But the USA will soon start killing with drones & so Indonesian youth will react & form militias to defend themselves. More drone escalation & so on. And who they gonna hate? Australia.
So be happy for the boat people. You fools have already signed on for a new drone war. And Australia will be on the 'revenge' end of it. And then you'll look back & say "remember the good old days when our worries was just a few boat people. Ah, those were the days."

Labor been outsmarted by monkey smugglers.

They call for assistance before leaving indo waters knowing aussie ships in area - once onboard they have to be bought here. And because their in international waters can't be arrested for smuggling.

We should pop a few more holes in the boat to make sure it sinks, don't help & use the Schultz defence. I KNOW NOTHING .... NOTHING.

What can you do about the tide of people or the Geopolitical events causing these people to come to our shores?

Your choice:- rant and rave about Boat People and what should, or could, or maybe, or might be done about it. Fact is, YOU JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT WOULD WORK IF YOU HAD THE POWER TO DO IT ANYWAY. All you do know is YOU DON'T HAVE THE POWER.

So, I suggest you come up with a strategy that deals with the reality, more foreigners are coming. Tear down and breakdown your prejudices and isolationist instincts. They are your biggest enemies not the tide of people that you cannot control, like the wind or the weather. Such an attitude is going into a head-on collision with reality that does not care about your preferences, likes or dislikes. We can't live in isolation anymore, the global era has arrived and here to stay.

Remember what Pol Pot did when he tried to turn the clock back to the "Year Zero" in Cambodia. That did not work out so well.

Howard government spent $2.4b over 4 years on illegal immigration (including building Nauru & PNG facilities) and basically bought it to a halt. In 2006 Howard spent less than $500m on immigration. We have spent $5.2b in the last 4 years & the cost is exploding. We have a solution that works. Question is why won't Labor use it?
And why do we give asylum to 90% of people who come here illegally & only 30% of those who come here legally (by plane) who we know who they are & some history of them. Maybe of those numbers were around the other way we could also reduce the boats.

Per head of population we accept far more immigrants than the USA & almost all European countries. Many countries do not accept coming from Iraq or Afghanistan a reason for asylum anymore. So why do we?

SO if the Nauru solution was implemented again & the costs dropped to $500m/yr again -$800m/yr savings could :: build 4500 public houses to house our homeless. Create 1600 new hospital beds with nurses & doctors to service them. Create 2400 aged care nursing beds with staff. Build a brand new major 1000 bed hospital with all latest equipment every 2 years (ttl cost $1.6b). 20 brand new schools for 40,000 students. Build 80km of a new 4 lane highway. 400MW solar power plant. 180km of double track railway line.

So do you prefer something from above or waste the money on roughly 13000 illegals? So we are wasting money keeping illegals out instead of building a great nation.

Very true we have had far greater immigration per head of population in terms of immigration both legal and illegal than any other Western Country for decades.

If, we do have immigration to look good internationally. It's not working. Look how Australia is portrayed in the international media and lectured to by the UN as being "racist". Usually, by Countries that do not permit immigration and never grant citizenship to overseas workers who live and work legally for decades in their Countries and remain as underclass. Unlike Australia that grants dual citizenship, without any obligations upon those who receive the boon of Citizenship. This discriminates against born and bred Australians. I agree this situation of freebies to those who enter without making concessions in the first place is absurd.

On the other hand, it's our fault if we dole out freebies, without requiring proper commitment and not just in words. There's no unity in this Country. If, there was there would be a network of mutual responsibility among the Citizens. Where citizens would feel the pressure to contribute and even shame if they "begged" for handouts.

The Government is like a mirror of the people, only squandering the shared resources of the Nation for the self benefit of the politicians and their coterie of lobbyists. So, don't believe for a second what you say could be done with any money saved by implementing a "Howard" type solution. Let's just imagine there were savings, it would never be spent on the citizens it would be convoyed into the pockets of the opulent and extremely wealthy under many guises.

In a society that supports true mutual responsibility by educating the young and by example of the adults. The "economic" refugees would soon see that the days of sticking their hand out for freebies would be gone for good and so would the incentive to freeload. It would take a different kind of society, actually more like the old authentic Australia, based on the glue of Unity and mutual responsibility.
