"..."Potentially significant weaknesses and risks have been identified in our force posture that mostly relate to the capacity of ADF bases, facilities and training areas, particularly in Australia's north and west regions, and our ability to sustain high tempo operations beyond a few months," the review said.

Mr Smith said in that context, the navy faced the greatest challenges, followed by the air force.

The review also noted there was a perception of a lack of defence visibility in Australia's north and west.

"More visibility, not necessarily by new or additional bases but by a greater presence, would reinforce the defence of Australia policy and bring greater visibility and presence to northern Australian," he said.

Opposition defence spokesman Stuart Robert said the interim report tacitly confirmed the widely held view that the military presence in the north would need to be increased at significant cost...."

Forget just Indonesia. Broaden your mind. The future is an interesting thing, very hard to predict.

However, this doesn't mean, do fark all, chill out, and adopt the "she'll be right, mate", Bob Brown (non-) defense policy:

ie. push potential projects down the road, and maybe start, or, nor start them years later. Then, maybe get/build/buy a tug-boat or two in 10 years.

Yes, I'm being facetious.

Nothing like delays and gambling on the future.
