I would love to know any residents opinions on the subject, as I am doing a dissertation on the social and financial implications of the growth of the backpacker market. Would you agree or disagree that the positive economic benefits to the area outweigh any problems? e.g. increased crime, drunken behaviour. Would really appreciate any thoughts :)
Thanks,
Natalie

Really, as a long-term resident of Cairns 18+ years, i would say no.
I go into the city about 3 or 4 times a week to walk around, relax and have a coffee and i have rarely (if ever) that i can even remember, seen any backpacker misconduct. Sure over the years there has been the very odd case of a backpacker from the UK or France convicted of common assault but it's rare.
Unfortunately the vast majority of the problems come from the indigenous population on friday/saturday nights whom wilfully chose to create problems. Also the homeless population (again, majority indigenous) tend to be nuisances on a relatively regular basis hassling both tourists and locals for money and/or cigarettes.

They can be, especially when they get drunk and carry on at night.
You can often see them passed out on the esplanade at 5 in the morning on a weekday.
If you want some good information on Cairns check out http://cairnslife.wordpress.com
It could have some more info. Its a gem site that has articles written by locals and people that moved to Cairns.
