"Stoly" If you look at the list of courses proposed for the "chopping block", you'll see Russian 101 and 102 among those proposed to go. This is a separate issue from eliminating the Russian Studies Certificate.

"2 cents" fails to see the illogic of retaining the Russian major, yet eliminating the 1st and 2nd years of the language! How is one to major in Russian without learning the language??
One more example of the fuzzy thinking and inablility to "connect the dots" of our UH bureaucrats!
Your analysis on the absurdity of the logic would be correct if those were really all the 1st and 2nd year Russian language courses as the name might imply. That is not the case though. That's a service program which allows NON-MAJORS to fulfill a UH 2-year general language requirement. The BA is still being offered so the department will still teach first and second year Russian courses to Russian Language majors. So if the proposed changes goes through, non-majors will have to take one of the other languages offered, e.g., German, French, Spanish, Hawaiian, etc, to meet that requirement and the Russian department will not be required to offer as many sections of first and second year Russian courses. They will still offer it to their majors just not for everyone. As for the certificate, this implies 15 credit hours of 300 level or above courses while the BA requires 24 credit hours. That would imply a difference of roughly 3 additional senior level classes.

If you want more info: hit the UHM website and type "prioritization process" into the search engine and follow the links. All the raw data and department self-evaluations and college level evaluations are listed there.

2 cents' labyrinthine interpretations of what would be done to Russian 101-202 are beyond the ken of most of us. It seems to me that preventing students from fulfilling their language requirements through the study of Russian would just contribute even more to lack of enrollment. Perhaps those taking it for 2 years would only want to study Russian to use it later as a tool in their research in so many different fields such as political science, history, military science, not to mention the hard sciences, where the Russians excell, such as physics, chemistry, geology, and so on.

Those are the realities/politics of modern university life and as such, there is a level of complication to this shell game that the superficial Star Bulletin article does not even begin to address. The simplest of which is the "program" names do not always mean what you would assume they do. Such is the case here and with several other programs.

I strongly doubt UHM has a large number of students who attend just to take a non-major Russian language requirement. Regardless, even if I'm wrong, those non-majors that truly want to take Russian language course to better their future career options will still be able to enroll in the appropriate courses reserved for majors via instructor overrides.

It's about time Hawaii-Manoa cut out Classics. The administration is obviously not competent to run an actual university. It would be nice if they all went away and started a Hinshaw-Quigley Barber College. But what's the point of teaching Oahu kids the basis of Western culture, anyhow? It's just absurd. Mathematics would be worth having a look at as well.

the problem seems is the IDIOTIC regents who keep raising the salaries to attract administrators from the mainland

We cant afford this dangerous game of copying the mainland. this is not the mainland so start hiring local people at normal salaries before our entire school collapses.

Axing so many valuable programs is unnecessary. We are spending fortunes in upkeep on the dinasaur that is called UH Manoa. Merge most Undergraduate programs with the West Oahu 4 year program and the Community colleges. Build a new stadium out there. Keep most of the post graduate programs and East West Center at UH. Move the rest of National Marine Fisheries to their Salt Lake offices. Take a bulldozer to all the ratty, termite ridden, mildew infested, crumbling buildings that have sat there for the last 50 years, and let Manoa Valley return to some semblance of normal life. There's more than enough room out west for all that junk, and more. If a Second City is ever to make it as more than a fantasy, and if traffic congestion is ever to be eased in our lifetimes, locating a much larger percentage of students and faculty out west could help accomplish those goals.
The State of Hawaii has absolutely no money to build a 2nd State university in West Oahu. This island population and the amount of students both local and foreign is too small and too poor to be able to maintain two major State universities on one small island. As it stands the developer who was going to build the UH West Oahu has pulled out due to money issues so there is no money for even a modest expansion of UH West Oahu. On top of which UH faculty and their departments located at UH Manoa or the Medical School in Kakaako Waterfront park will NEVER move their faculty and the departments to West Oahu and the nightmare commute that they will have to endure if they move to W Oahu.

If West Oahu kids who want an degree in Engineering, Law, Medicine, an Architectural degree, etc. they MUST attend UH Manoa. Hence no matter how much is spent on UH in W Oahu it will forever be a FEEDER school to UH Manoa. From day one it was bad idea, and an obvious money pit that would drain valuable resources from UH Manoa to expand UH West Oahu. Anyway it is better for W Oahu kids to dorm on UH Manoa campus and attend school and learn and live in a true academic environment.

I noticed you made a comment about "restoring" Manoa if UH would completely move from Manoa to W Oahu. Sounds like you are a Manoa resident living near UH and have to endure the never ending hassle of students coming in at 5am or earlier to find choice parking in front of the homes next to UH Manoa. Sorry but UH Manoa is NEVER going away. I sympathize with you however the answer to your problem is to clearly delineate where on street parking is acceptable and have HPD consistently tow any student cars in your area that is illegally parked. Students will learn real fast not to park inappropriately. Forget Mufi's Aloha train to nowhere that not address the UH school commuting crowd, however if the City & State implement a solid express school bus route to/from UH to Ewa that would greatly reduce the number of student cars littering the grounds of the Manoa area.

Hiring MRC Greenwoood was a complete waste of valuable resources. Salary and perks that you listed, she will easily cost taxpayers close to $1 million per year. The bulk of the budget is at UH Manoa and Hinshaw is responsible to address budget and other issues. Therefore what is Greenwood's job responsibilities?

If someone says to bring in $$ to UH that is pure B S myth and that was clearly dispelled with Dobelle and his alleged "connections" to big wigs in the Carter administration. Lets be honest about all of this Greenwood got her PhD in nutrition is not an MD from a Medical school so tell me how much "pull" does she have securing national research grants in medicine? Rhetorical question, the answer is ZERO. The medical grants will be won/lost on the researchers working at UH and NOT because of any university president. Therefore Greenwood's position is basically ceremonial like the current Emperor in Japan or the Queen of England. Right now our HI State gov't does not need any more Kings or Queens. Hinshaw could have been given the title "UH President" and minor raise that would have served the university just fine.

Now we have a UH President who has no real responsibility so all that is left for her is to do "make work" and/or manipulate UH so as to give herself recognition, show she is in charge of something and is "important". That in itself is a very dangerous situation.
