I work at a local conveince store and I do see people drive up in caddys and BMW that come in and buy crap/junk food with the EBT cards. They also buy $50-$100 in steaks chicken and pork chops. I admit its not all black but because of where i live it is a majority. There is one guy that comes in and buys milk, eggs, bread, meat and fruit with his EBT. Sure he may have some chips on the thing but most of the time its healthy food.

As much as I defend the EBT I am also sad and angered by what I saw today. A woman in line ordered two large deli sandwiches (publix) and had a combo with a large drink and some meat. She took her time to order which was why I was quite irritated. And she was also in front of me at the checkout... and paid with an EBT credit card! Why are Sandwich Combos allowed on EBT? Only groceries should be allowed not pre-made food! BTW the woman and her daughter were way more than healthy but did not skimp on their cheese or beef. I support the program for the truly needy but I think there should be a filter on who gets to be on it. ONLY groceries should be allowed on it. I was disgusted by this beggar's (yes I think she is a beggar) misuse of the EBT system.
I work at a grocery store and cold deli food such as sandwhiches and salad ect. may be bought, but hot meals such as the publix deli arent allowed to be bought with on EBT

My husband works all day long. I can't afford to work because I would be working to take my little girls to a daycare so we do what we can and think the government for helping us or we might just go under before we turn 21. And believe me we do not do any drugs or drank any alcohol.
Ok, if your job can't pay enough to pay for daycare, you must be retarded or an ugly fat hooker. Ever heard of a rubber? HA! Die for all I care, I work to feed my family, not yours.

Let me know who you are so I can report you to DFACS. I'm sick of women who are under 21 having babies and living off the dole. Get a freaking job like the rest of us had to do and put your kids in with mom. She can handle it. She raised you didn't she?
Both my girlfriend and I work. We have one child, and we legitimately qualified. The number of people living in your home raises the maximum income for qualification

I'm 23, have a kid, and am in school full time. I work 20 hours a week @ 12/hr, and my girlfriend works 20 @ 8/hr. I also get Hope, Pell, and student loans. We had no problem getting food stamps. Just hot the card, and I can't wait to buy tuna for sushi, all organic free range meat, organic vegs, and in the spring I'll buy some fruit trees. I bet you think I sound like a complete jerk, but you know what? When I had a nice job I was shelling out a lot of money to the federal government. After I get done with school I'll be shelling out a lot of money to the Feds. If they're gonna steal from me for the rest of my life and use the money to fight bullsh*t wars, and sent corperate execs on plush vacations, and pay farmers to over produce genetically modified corn, bathing in DDT, then why not get some of it back. Sure I don't NEED it, but they don't need to take my money and do corrupt things with it. So I'm gonna take back pennies of the dollars I give. I encourage anyone who can do it to get they're price of pie while it's hot and ready to be eaten. Maybe if we work hard enough we can shut down the whole bakery.

I am a white woman who has worked all my grown life, since 1966. I had a nervous breakdown last year and spent some time on a mental health unit. I was evicted after losing my job and became homeless. I have been desperately trying to find a job but along with many the other unemployed people I have not been successful. I am in a transitional shelter for women trying to get back their independence and on their feet again. I receive food stamps (actually called Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program - EBT card)and follow the rules for it's use and am trying to get our local Farmers Market to accept them. I am in agreement with them not being used for alcohol, tobacco or drugs but think restrictions could be extended to candy, soft drinks, snack foods (but these items have huge lobbying groups so that will never happen). I also think it's wrong not to allow purchase of cleaning supplies and toiletries (female hygiene products, etc)but I guess their lobbing groups don't care or work too hard for their products. Not all groups of people are crooks or trying to beat the system but there are some people who do and then end up ruining it for the rest of society. I am thankful to have some help when I needed it.

"I found one of these cards on the ground at a Walmart. I had no idea what it was. Turns out its how people rip off the government. I did a search and found who it belongs to. I found their addresses and myspace. They live in a million dollar home and OWN a restaurant! Is there anyways I could report this person for stealing from the government?"

What were they even doing at Wal-Mart being a business owner with a million dollar home? Forget Wal-Mart: With that kind of money they should go to Norstroms or Brooks Brothers, or for food their local organic outlet, but not Wal-Mart. The point of having $65.00-$90.00 polos (or the Lacoste crocodile, Vineyard Vines Whale, and the Ralph Lauren Polo player) is to tell people you make enough money to not shop at Wal-Mart, which someone with a million dollar house and owning a restaurant obviously should have. Nothing say's "I'm upper middle class." like the Lacoste crocodile.

Kids are taught by their parents to live off the gov't when they enter school by taking advantage of the free lunch program. These kids are the first to buy colas at recess, and lots of them wear expensive shoes and jackets. I don't think a single free lunch should be served to any student in high school. These kids should be working to pay for their lunches, not me.

I have owned a local cs down here in macon for about 5 years now, and I pretty much know all of our normal customers, and I know their jobs and the such, but it just ticks me off when I see a woman drive up in a Mercedes or BMW, and come in and by about 20 dollars of junk food on a EBT card, then proceed to play about 50 dollars a day in Lottery tickets.
This is a problem in the african american community. the georgia ebt program is full of fraud and abuse. Dont get me started on how many people come into my store a day and ask if they can get money off of their ebt card. Guess the dope man doesnt take ebt.
And a sorta off topic questions, do you guys know that poor people with credit cards are a factor in high gas prices? Most of my customers doesnt have a bank account, or good credit, and I get about 20 Credit card chargebacks against my account a month from customers who pay with a credit card and just turn around and report the card as stolen. The local police refuse to arrest these criminals, and getting a lawyer isnt worth the time to get my money back.
First off, that's a bunch of BS.

Folks who get FS cards can't afford a Benz--they have their income investigated enough and their backgrounds checked going through their teeth and back up their butts again.

How do you know she or he isn't driving a car that belongs to someone else? Yes, poor folks have friends with money. Also, I have stood in line for food stamps myself in hard times, most of those folks in there are coming in to bring their pay stubs.

They ARE working, for minimum wage or LESS in some cases, which still makes them eligible for assistance. Second, they can buy whatever they want with their EBT cards. If they want to eat junk food, they're only killing themselves; so what do you care? I haven't seen anyone with a food stamp card driving a Benz, unless it was someone else's.

And if the lottery tickets aren't a problem for them, why should they be for you? So what, they buy lottery tickets? There are plenty of folks on welfare who ~work for a living~ and entertainment expenses are allowed when they are working out your budget, just as they would be for anyone else. It's their money, they earned it. Yes, you are allowed to have a job and welfare, too, especially if your job doesn't pay jack.

Lastly, do you just take credit cards without asking for proper ID? If you have that high an incidence of theft in your area, then check id cards first. If the names don't match (and some folks pictures are even on their credit cards), don't accept it. Don't position yourself for failure -- you as the merchant have the right to demand their ID when they hand you a card. Check it and stop blaming them if you let them roll you. If you let them, they should.

Because some people are homeless and they have no place to cook their foods. Some stores will even allow you to purchase hot food with an EBT card. Also, sub sandwiches ARE groceries. The same ingredients are in them as if you would have bought the individual ingredients and made it yourself--and the sub is actually cheaper.

Homeless folks who have no kitchen in which to put groceries are allowed to get stamps. There are also some McDonald's that take them. Everyone just isn't as fortunate as you to have a stove to cook on.

The pre-cooked foods are typically bought by those living in the streets; but others can buy them, too. Just like you would.

Is there a reason you think folks with food stamps should be treated differently? Many of them work for a living, too. In a country that took 15 years to raise the minimum wage to another poverty level.

Thats bullcrap.... MY husband works and I do not, we have 3 children and he makes about $400/wk BEFORE paying child support. We get enough to feed our family for about 2 1/2-3 weeks without spending anything out of pocket. You do NOT have to be unemployed to receive them.

Your husband sounds like a real loser. Why does he keep producing babies if he can't afford to feed them? It is not my job to feed his kids. Quit asking the government to take money from me to support his stupid decisions. Has he ever heard of a vasectomy?

Why don't you get a job yourself? You are a leech on society. I'd like my wife to be able to stay at home, but she works so we don't have to beg for handouts.

I agree, if you can't afford children don't have them. Poor planning causes most of the welfare in America, poor planning is the results of low IQ's. Go to work to support your offspring, I don't want to support them, I have my own to take care of then you won't have to be a welfare bum.

If I have to be drug tested in order to receive the money I actually work for to get the users of EBT should be drug tested in order to recieve the money I worked for and paid to them. I also feel if you have a kid and receive public assistance you should be made to take birth control. If you can't afford one you can't afford any more. And the amount you receive will never increase based on the number of kids (in essence paying someone more to have more kids). Why is this appraoch never discussed. This approach also does not recognize color!

You sound like a real idiot. I know of a women who works, has a "HUGE MORTGAGE", has five kids, and a working husband, as well as other bills and expenses need to take care of her children. And guess what, she has food stamps and does not abuse the government but thanks them for helping her in her time of need. And if you are so "AGAINST" EBT why are you complaining about not being able to get them. Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black to me.
