I work at a cvs in illinois. I find that with our pharmacy staff it's convenient for them to stand around and walk around the store while I'm busting my ass putting away items because I'm just a cashier, and I only have a customer every 2 seconds. Honestly people, I don't want to hear any crap about how your order was late and what not, I bust my ass at work, most of the time by myself in the front, trying to put away items, and help customers every two seconds, so excuse me if I'm just a little ticked off when I get to the counter to answer you're stupid question or ring you up when I have other things to be doing. Cvs is a waste of my time. If any of you are going to apply at cvs, don't it's not worth the time. I work maybe 5-10 hours when he needs me, sometimes more, and I'm getting paid 9.00 an hour. Having said that I'm lucky if my check is even 75 dollars. Store manager takes all the hours for himself, while I get none.

Cvs attempts to squeeze every ounce of sweat and blood out of people before they decide what they are worth. Over the last 2 years I've seen the 24 hour store i'm in go from close to 900 payroll hours to about 700. We are meeting budget 80% of the time. They "require" a safe work enviorment, yet don't give you the ability to staff a store to allow for a job to be done safe. The average employee of cvs is doing the job of 3 people.(cashier, stock person, and backroom) yet they get paid for just one of those jobs. If you are a supervisor You do the following,(customer relations, Rx cashier, Frontstore cashier, Photo lab tech, vendor management, loss prevention, Human resource issues, cash management, maintain store cleanliness) and you get paid S***. This was a good job a few years back, when it was a resonable work load. Any hardworking person will agree, the work your given is what you have to get done. Cvs seems to think that it's ok to Run a retail store with no breaks, no staff, and still thinks that it's gonna be stocked and customers will be happy.

CVS is one of the worst places to work. I started working for them a year ago and it was fun. I started out as a cashier and after working 3 months was promoted to shift supervisor A. I didn't get a rase. I was still making minimun wage. After a year there I transferred to a new state to help get a store ready to open. While opening the store I was told by 4 different people that what I was making wouldn't work and that they would make sure I got at least 9.50. Well it's been 4 months and I got .50 more. I make 8.50 an hour. I have completed all the training they wanted me to take and even more. I asked if I could get the raise they promised me and now they are telling me that I can't get it because of my old boss back home. There is a shift supervisor B who is making more than me. I don't see how that's fair.

Also I was in a wreck and it messed up my car. I asked my boss if I could work the opening shift so my cousin could drop and pick me up. It was for only 4 days. My manager couldn't do that for me. Luckly I was ale to find a ride 3 of the days. The 4th day I had to walk 5 miles to the bus stop and then ride the bus for an hour to get to work. Well while I was walking I twisted my ankle. It hurt so bad I was cryin but I kept walking. I got to a cvs that was 3 miles from my house to buy a ace bandage and one of the girls saw me. She offered to give me a ride. So I had to work that night on a twisted ankle and I was over exhausted from walking.
It feels like to me that CVS dosent care about their employees only about their money. I didn't want to quit because I was hopeing to get into the pharacy because I'm going to school to be a pharmacist but I can find another job.

So I wouldn't recremend a job at cvs.

My concern is the company is cutting payroll to the point no one is working in the front store or the pharmacy. Having 2 people working up front on each shift with no overlap and a crap load of work to complete. Forcing managers to work an average of 60 plus hours a week and only get paided for 45 is worse and if your store is not up to standards and all the work complete then they your DM or the AVP says you should be lucky to have a job and if you can not handle it then we will find someone who can! I say the company should put the money where their mouth is or shut up. You can not except to have great customer service in either front or pharmacy without front store people or techs. If you not going to spend money on payroll then don't expect great customer service and all team members to complete the boat load of projects that corporate spit out like used gum. I sick and tired of seeing friends out of job and long lines in stores with corporate VPs walking and flying around like everybody should be thrilled to work for this company. I would like to see them do it and feel feed up and fustrated. Everybody knows they wouldn't last 90 days.

The pay was ok when I started, but a 21 cent raise after a year doesn't seem to go too far.
I had no respect there. My boss took things out on me and transfered me to the pharmacy when she got "fed up" with me. The pharmacy was worse, apparently there, "tech training" means having someone read all the manuals and then not teach anything.
The popular pharmacist there was full of herself, and made tons of mistakes. And don't take it out on the techs when you hand a bag to her and tell her to ring it up and then the customer comes back or calls and says it's the wrong person's medication. It's the pharmacist's job to check them, it's the tech's job to get them from the bins and ring them up. And as for the lead tech, your job is to TRAIN new techs so the old ones can move on and new people can be hired. People tend to lose patience when the trainer is a bad teacher and refuses to do her job. And when you wirte someone up for trying to sell needles when she has asked twice for you to help a customer who wants to purchase them and she has to go to where they are to look for them and then has to ask the pharmacist because you are ignoring her, you'd better pray that the employee doesn't come to the drive up window and ask for you just so she can spit on you. Also, it takes a really stupid person to call someone else stupid when she is standing right there. And it is really rude when the former employee who has transfered to another store comes in to that store, which is closer to home, to fill a prescription and is asked by the lead tech "Why don't you get prescriptions filled at your own store?" Former employee or not, anyone who comes into a store where they are not employed are customers, and deserve the same respect as customers who don't work for the company at all. If she thinks I am a jerk for reporting her, I only did it because she said that without thinking at all. My coworkers were idiots, world of warcraft weirdos, jerks, and psychos.
As for the environment, I would have to say it was boring, repetitive, cold, unhappy, and cruel. I couldn't afford to pay bills sometimes because my hours were constantly cut. I always got the night hours, which caused me to sleep until noon during the day and then have to go back for more torture. Luckily I got a transfer to a store where I get treated better by my boss and most of my coworkers.
Last and not least we never got to take our breaks and lunches !!!!
CVS is the worst place in the world to work.
A couple of things. 1.) I was a restaurant manager for a year, and I tell all my associates that are struggling to get the job done at CVS, or just don't give much in the way of effort that I can let them work at my old restaurant for a day or two on the production line and they will come crawling back on their hands and knees. CVS associates do not have alot asked of them. Managers work hard and put in alot of hours . Associates basically get paid a fair wage for the job that they do. Like I said try going to work in a restaurant for 7.50 an hour and then come back and I think your post will have an addendum.2.) You need to work on your form of prose, it comes across a little weak.

If you people hate CVS so much why do you work there? Acquire skills that other companies will hire you to use instead of complaining about CVS.
Having to work at jobs you hate is the results of not getting a higher education and voting for obama who caused such high unemployment.

It isn't their fault you sleep til noon and can not pay your bills.
If you are having your hours cut back and are being transferred, they aren't pleased with you either. Decide what you would like to do for a living and then pay someone to train you for it. Then, if you aren't receiving the training you hoped for, you have some leverage to complain.
There are MANY worse places to work in the world. There are many people who would change places with you in a heart beat.

Gold Kist is a bad place to work also--While waiting in line I met a worker in the plant--what an image of a middle aged dejected human being: Shoulders slumped, eyes downcast, wearing heavy overall. He described bone numbing cold in the chill rooms, long shifts with few minutes allowed outside of the room as well as mean supervisors.
Tortorous (spelling) conditions are at CVS--Walgreens too. Pharmacy has becom Institutionalized--the humanity is squeezed out of the store by the profit mongering mindset.
I thought it was like that everywhere--I think those that stay at the job figure that so they don't demand respect or move along.
Then life circumstances caused me to change jobs--guess what--this place is HEAVEN. I am treated with respect, the atmosphere of the place is harmony, and I know from their responses to me that I am appreciated...

and they have. And It is the sameTHIS DO8 hours shifts,he explainedso humanwhile waiting

The overall problem highlighted in the CVS employee's post is the ridiculously low minimum wage. Currently it is $6.55 per hour, and no one can live on that small amount, working 40 hours/week. Even worse are families where the parents only earn minimum wage and try to support kids. At the least, it should be at this date - January 11, 2009 - Ten dollars ($10) per hour. Obama says he wants it raised to $9.50/hr by 2011, even that would keep people trapped in poverty.
Compounding that problem of course is the 10 million illegal immigrants getting paid lower than minimum wage in an 'off the books' manner.
Compounding the problem even more is that amerikan companies are fastly shipping manufacturing jobs overseas or to Mexico, while congress gets paid off to ignore that problem. We shipped all our steel and aluminum production to India and China, no wonder Alabama and Pennsylvania small towns are mired in poverty, drugs and crime, where 50 years ago they were like Mayberry RFD! The south's textile industry is all going overseas to china, the american car makers are bankrupt, about the only thing we still produce in this sorry nation is fast food!
LASTLY, American corporate executives earn anywhere on average around 130 times the ordinary workers at their companies. Compare this to Japan's average executive pay, about 20 times their average employee annual salaries. No wonder amerika has irretrievably gone down the toilet. Let's all move to Europe, in Germany and France, 2 of the world's biggest economies, the hourly employees get a decent wage, enough to raise 2-3 kids and get good medical care, plus they get 4-6 weeks of vacation each year. That sort of non-greedy corporate management hasn't affected those countries negatively, in fact the crime rates and unemployment rates are low due to the overall benefit of having a society full of happily employed workers.
If we aren't goint to emigrate out of this cess pool of a nation, then lets START A REBELLION!
Why you keep spelling America as "AMERIKA", with a "K" (done it twice)?.... Are you stupid, moron, or just your key board is defective, or both? This country do not need here a person that writes America as "AMERIKA", with a "K") Why don't you go and live in Kanada or Kanadahh? This spelling takes credibility out of you man!......you are an idiot! or perhaps a REDNECK.

Thank you for your insightful observation. I have not given my opinion based on whether they are well run or not and, if they are not, the problem will take care of itself. There is very little that we as individuals can do about companies we may work for, but we can improve ourselves and thus our situation in life.

Be careful Maria, when I suggested self improvement I was attacked. After this thread started I noticed a few these stores closed. I guess bad management or lack of customer support has caused it. Sometimes when stores get into trouble excessive pressure is placed upon the low level employees. I suggest this would be a good time to seek employment elsewhere and do as you suggested about acquisition of more employer desired skills.
