They must not have heard that story about alligators in the sewers yet. Lets put the coppers down there to investigate....

As punishment, we should tie a couple of the covers around their neck and make them walk a mile or more! Those things are heavy...I don't think they'd want to touch another one for the rest of their life!
I hope no one gets hurt because of these stupid people!

Today 3 guys got arrested with 8 manhole covers. That's about $120 bucks.

So, you're getting arrested for your $40 cut of the action?

There's some stupid, lazy people in this world. You can work at a farm and shovel doo-doo or wash dishes at a restaurant and make 9 dollars an hour...
huh

Leaving a manhole uncovered in the street is tantamount to leaving a bomb in the street. This is very reckless endangerment. They ought to filter the scrap piles and find out who is doing this before something very bad happans.THE PUNISHMENT IN THIS CASE SHOULD BE EXCEPTIONALLY SEVERE. TAKES ALL KINDS OF SICKOOOOS. TOO DO THIS CRIME you have too be a sickooo.

Talk about unnecessary spending of tax dollars
It is unfortunate that manhole covers have to be protected from thieves but doing it is not unnecessary when people are stealing them.

Someone is going to get killed if this continues.

This is no joke - I hit an open manhole with my car back in the 80s, and it bent the frame of my car and put me in the hospital for a week. Just imagine your car doing a 180-degree turn instantly at 40 mph. That's what mine did.
So, was the last YUGO you purchased?

If all city/ county governments have their logos put on these manholes, this cost is mostly on the developers or contractors, that might help cut down the thefts. If the scrap yards also required a picture ID to sell scrap to them, then they have a name to go with whoever brought in a large amount of these or copper. I also think they need to punish the scrap yards that get caught with these items also.
Good post. It's not like someone is bringing in a bunch of cans to be recycled. Make it a felony to buy these things from anybody but a licensed gov't. agency. Manhole covers last...what...100 yrs. before they have to be replaced? SO it's not like scrap places would be seeing these every day and they should know that they are stolen.

I don't think that a alarm system on every manhole is cost effective. It might be cheaper to let them steal the manhole covers and replace them later. There should be some kind of lock on it that I think would be cheaper than maintaining an alarm.

You "don't think that an alarm system is cost effective". At least you admit that you really do not know.

An aerosol fog horn is a few dollars and rigging it would be peanuts. There would be no need for electrical wiring.

The down side of this would be that every time a manhole cover was removed, the aerosol can would have to be replaced.

Compare that to the $200 that a manhold cover costs and the possible loss of life and destruction of vehicles and it does not seem too expensive.

Why not just a couple of tack welds on the manhole cover? Easy to do and easy to undo when the need arises.

I agree with you but it seems that the powers that be, have discounted doing this.

I do not know why.
