Jazz drummer Jimmy Baum lived for the energy of performing

Full story: Santa Cruz Sentinel

It will likely be a long time, perhaps years, before the shock of Jimmy Baum's death gives way to warm reflections on his life and music.

Wow, from everything I've been hearing and reading online, apparently the wife was the driving force to MAKE Jim put down his sticks. He was miserable about it, until recently, he picked his sticks back up and had been doing gigs again.

He had moved out of the family home and was taking his life back. They say, that, when a person makes this decision (in a bad relationship when one oppresses the other) it is the dangerous time of the break up.

I had heard from a witness at the location, that, there were six shots fired, my gosh. I couldn't verify that, but, she heard the shots and went to see what happened. SAD STORY, DOMESTIC ABUSE IS SICK.

The local news outlets have this story pretty much under wraps, was surprised to see this much said.

Yes, a real paper might do some investigation about what resources are available in this area for men who are victims of domestic abuse.

But no such interest from the Sentinel, nor from the politicians, and not the many local charities who receive public funding for caring for victims of domestic abuse, who all seem more interested in turning this issue into a gender war than helping victims.

Jimmy will be greatly missed. I'll always remember seeing him daily during the 4 years I worked as a checker at mission street safeway. I would ring him up and he was always so friendly, asking how I was and always being so lively in spirit. I knew he was a very caring man and it didn't take long for anyone to see this. He was the type to brighten anyone's day instantly, for sure. I saw him perform recently at a Japanese sushi restaurant in Scott's Valley and he seemed so content with being able to perform with his band. He seemed so happy. He had a smile on his face the whole time. Wow, what a talented man too. I know he will always be missed and his memory and sprit will always be alive. Time cannot erase that. My prayers go out to his family and 4 sons. Please know that this goodbye is heart wrenching to say the least, but it's only temporary. Jimmy is in heaven waiting for all his loved ones. God bless you and may he comfort you during this time of need.

She was a enlightened socialist democrat. you will do what they say when they say or they will kill you. Too bad a musicians life boils down to this. henpecked husband gets killed by control freak wife. What a waste.

It's also too bad that people feel the need to comment on peoples lives of which they know NOTHING of. Including the back story of either party. Both Jim AND Gayle were beautiful people that helped out so much in so many lives. I Know that I owe Gayle my life. I think you should try to keep in mind the children that have lost both of their parents and the pain they are still and will be feeling for a very long time. You don't know the whole story and you won't. So keep your "She must have been crazy" to a minimum out of respect.

Since the dawn of the internet we all are quick to express our opinions, no matter if we actually don't know the true circumstances. Please keep in mind, these were actual people, not just trite stories where people can spout off uninformed opinions. I don't know what happened that night, I'm probably going to be trying to figure out what happened for the rest of my life. What I do know is that Jimmy and Gayle were good, imperfect people who were well-loved and loved others in return.

Jimmy, you were the go to man at Ace during all the years you were there. When I would go in needing fix it advice and I saw you were working I knew I would be getting the answers I needed. Thanks for all the times you saved me! When they told me you left I was bummed and now this. God bless you good man!

it would be to see such an outpouring of sympathy when WOMEN are clearly victims of this kind of behavior which of course is the norm...don't remember sentinel every doing that...and where is the teary eyed article about her life? The mere lack of one is prejudicial.

Not enough info has been made public to make such a determination on where the "blame" lies, irresponsible journalism to tell only one side of story

Just as testosterone is not a explanation for the raping a woman, menopause is not an justification to kill someone. Adults are required to behave civilly towards others. Biology is never an excuse for criminal behavior.

I'm sorry but why would anyone want to attend Gayle's memorial, not Jimmy's? Sure, many have fond memories of Gayle as a person and a teacher but now that this happened, it really changed things. Bottom line is that she took Jimmy's life, putting aside all the hypothetical guesses. She could have just taken her own life if she was determined to die but not his. Suicide and murder are both so selfish. Sorry to be blunt, but Gayle MURDERED him. That changes any sympathy anyone should have for her, except that she unstable enough to do this and Jimmy was a victim of it. I just don't understand people. This was a tragedy...someone didn't take Gayle's life. She did this selfishly and robbed their 3 sons of a dad who had no choice and chose to take her own life, damaging her 3 sons by knowing she did this to their parents. Don't forget who the victim is here. I really felt the need to say this and I'm not alone in this opinion obviously!!!

Yeah. well there must've been things going on that no one but those two knew about?
A woman doesn't just go randomamly and shoot her man!!
I pray for both of them,.... how terrible of a thing to happen?
But all of the "children" are of age. They have homes, insurance policies, and all of that, I don't believe they need any donations.
If anything is donated in either of their names I believe it should be music in the schools, and or the democratic party.

And I stand up for what I am posting on this..No one knows all of the details, it is a terrible thing to take ones life, and your own..Donations should be made to music, and the democratic party.
They would both be proud.

A very talent man Jim was. And I was one of the lucky people who got to know him well in the early 80S. When he played at cooper house, shadowbrook, N sanjose with J.B ,an the nightshift. It was an honor to go with him. His smile will always stay with me and his respect. As far as peoples opionins on what happened remember he new his situation and that was there buisness know ever really exspects things to go to extreme on both there parts! And its done sadly so apperciate the fact we were able to know them and pray for there childeren to be able to heal and grow living threw such a sad and life lasting ordeal!

I am their youngest son, and seeing most of these comments makes me lose faith in my community. NONE of you know their pasts with each other as us, their children, do; whether it were the good OR bad times. Both of my parents were extraordinary people who helped as much as possible to make our community, our friends, and their children as happy as possible. I am so fortunate to have had them as my parents. My mom was my best friend, and she was the most intelligent, caring, kind, magnanimous, artistic woman I had ever come across. Seeing these negative comments of her sickens me. What has happened, happened. There is no one to blame; there is no one to be mad at. None of that matters anymore. All we can do is celebrate the lives of two AMAZING individuals who cared more deeply for their surroundings than most people ever have and will.

You are so right, Parker and so strong don"t let those comments bother you, You had two very special parents who know one will know but you and your family the love and the life they taught you. God bless you and your brothers you sound like A amazing child Im sure if your parents read what you wrote they"d be proud and probably always will be you expressed your self with words that only good people could have taught you. And your outlook on your parents and life is most impressive so to all those negative comments ignore them you know the love they probably never had! May your parents rest in peace. respectfully !
