Editorial: Make change happen at ASH
Here at Atascadero, we're really running on fumes.'
Finally, the state's mental health director, Stephen Mayberg, understands the staffing crisis at Atascadero State Hospital.
To his credit, Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee, R-San Luis Obispo, held a summit last week with Mayberg and state prisons chief James Tilton to give them an up-close view of how critical ASH's personnel needs have become.
ASH recently closed two units and stopped admitting new patients because mental health professionals were leaving for higherpaying, comparable jobs in the state prison system. That exodus was stemmed--and ASH actually added 60 new hires -- when a one-time, $10 million infusion by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger brought state hospital salaries within hailing distance of prison pay. Good for the governor, Blakeslee and Mayberg. Read more

There's many dynamics involved in the dangerousness of ASH right now... The State deciding not to have mandatory meds is rediculous.
These men were sent to us BY THE COURTS due to being a danger to themselves or otheres, PERIOD.
No REAL raises have been in effect for many years.
What raises there have been never make an actual effect on the paycheck due to takeaways in other
areas. This number game is causing many to look elsewhere, almost everyone of us has a plan to leave ASH at this time. Schwarzenegger is adding to the fallout with his current plan to find a back door into our wages and benifits. the mandatory overtime gets worse and worse. Every time administration puts a temporary bandaid on the problem, we spring a new leak. I have personally watched too many coworkers that I care about get hurt at Atascadero State Hospital. I
have personally watched administration feed false information and skewed numbers to the public. I've seen too many coworkers die of a heart attack or commit suicide in the past few years. I've sen families collapse over the stress of the current conditions at ASH. I've seen Scwarzenegger's political ambition and lies ruin the lives of thousands of teachers, cops, firefighters, nurses, and psychtechs. It's time to realize that there is NO GOOD FAITH apparent under the Schwarzenegger Administration. IT'S TIME FOR A STATE WIDE WALKOUT!

I spent almost two decades in that so called " hospital" that protects the patients & public relations before addressing the safety of staff. Please , do walk out and let the so called management / admin. do the dirty work for a while. It is the ONLY way to get their poor attention span a kick start and begin to provide tangible results.Keep up the good work.
