Dating a Vietnamese man - Question?

I have been dating a Vietnamese man for almost a year. I know that there are cultural differences, and we have been able to talk openly about them, for the most part. The only issue I have is that he never says he loves me, and when I say it to him, he says "thank you". I know that he does, at least I'm almost certain he does, but he's only said it once to me. He says to his friends often, even his female friends, but I never hear it.
Is that normal? I know that the Vietnamese tend to be more reserved in relationships, but I don't understand his ability to effortlessly say it to others, but not to me. Can anyone shed light on this? I don't want it to cause problems for us. I love him very much and and want to understand where he is coming from. I don't want to make him uncomfortable by asking directly as it seems to be difficult for him to talk about.
I'm trying to research it on my own but I am not having much luck.
