I knew most of the Harlem cats talked about on here. I even knew some of the Brooklyn, Bx, and Queens cats. What folks are not saying is how many of us were encouraged to finish HS and College by most of these guys. I am not saying they were Angels. They were far from that. But they were definately more than folks realize.

Reggie and Georgie Fluellen were not typical gangsters. In fact reggie seemed to only like educated women. he was smooth and dashing with his suits etc. Georgie was similar and a bit more open with folks, although he had a heck of a temper. They had a guy named Vernon Roach who worked the concerts with them. They just loved the shows and dances. Great story about how the late great Frankie Crocker tried to beat them for some money lol. He never tried it again.

Pee wee was a GREAT BASKETBALL PLAYER and very smart and flashy! Had suits to match his cars. His side kick was Freddy Myers, Charles Caddilac, the late Clarence, and others. Not sure of the business but they had fun. Great story about how Big Willie hall and Pee wee almost fought. one day and even Pee Wees guys were a bit scared. Willie just played ball but took no shorts when it came to fighting.

Bill Underwood was a great Music Guy and did Maanager Slave. Did a great job. had an office right next to the legendary Norby Waters who managed and booked acts using underworld connections and muscle according to rumors. But a nice man lol.

Jessie Grey was also smooth. Dad was a bigtime Harlem Politician who was embarssed by Jessies street actions. I hear his sister is a great Attorney and Jessie is assisting her.

Watusi was a huge guy in the hood. Funny thing he came from a family of great ball players who all seemed to go to college to play ball. His youngest brother was even a star at LI Lutheran who at the time was like Oak Hill is today.

Remember Bat, Louie, Guy, and others very well. We often played ball together as youngsters. All had game and were nice but competitive.

Curly Shirley? Smooth. Humphy Slim great guy and nice and smooth. Cisco, a great friend who left us too early. Came to school everyday and studied despite working the streets and having tons of money.

I can go on and on with serious stories including King Tower games, Rucker stuff, The Shalimar Bar, Queens guys, Bx crew, etc. Never did anything myself, but the basketball affiliations were respected and got many of us through. Most of these guys, like other nationalities, have many family members now working as Doctors, lawyers, Police, Teachers, Professors etc. They also were responsible for hundreds if not thousands of kids making it out of the hood as it was called. They did some bad stuff. But lets also remember the other stuff as we remember them.

You know...I don't know about anyone else. From my point of view, people understand how smart they were. Most of these people did the best with what was given to them. People know they were smart. And simultaneously, not everyone wants to be a doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc. Given all that black people had to go through in those days, people know they were smart. If they weren't as smart as they were, people such as yourself wouldn't remember them, and they wouldn't have gotten as far.

Tell us more about your friend. Set up the scene - what team did he play for.
Arnold played High School for Clinton but was cut from the team because of academics , he went to a JC and then went to Oral Roberts where he led the nation in assists. He was drafted by the 76ers but was the last cut that year. He played a few years over seas but I always felt he should of been a Glob Trotter. His spin move was probably the best I had ever seen on a H.S. player to this day. Steve "The Bear" Shepard was one of the only players that didn't get knock off their feet from Dugger's passes that would appear in your shooting hand like magic. He once walked into to an all star game against Ernie Grunfield team from Queens at half time(Arnold was late). The Bx team was losing but Arnold scored 35 points in the second half all in Ernie's face and won the game. He walked out with the MVP.

Rich - that's real history. You, your friends and family need to chronicle this stuff. And this go out to people like qqqqqqqqq - it's not about stupidity, it's about living a life. Rich, do you think that if the NBA had more teams, or if the ABA had been around - Arnold would possibly have played major league basketball?

Arnold was true to his game - between the legs behind the back no look passes , spin on a dime before his time. The Doc convinced Cunningham to draft him but with the team they had he got cut. Google Arnold Dugger' his name is mentioned along with the legends of NYC bball.

Yea u r right. Im not from NY but ive read plenty of stories and testomonies from NBA Legends and Joe Hammond was da truth. His bank shot was unmatched. He had a special workout with the lakers and he hit 18 shots n a row while wilt elgin baylor and jerry west was wathcing. Then he killed pat riley n a one on one game. Dont forget about pee wee kirkland n his 135 n one game. But u just cant talk about NY when it comes to streetball cause each city had its legends. Det had Curtis Jones, Chi has Billy the kid harris (rip) n Arthur Sievels and LA has Ray lewsis. The ghetto and racism destroyed this talent

If anyone is interested in Frank Ward's story, you've got to get a copy of Carol Speed's ( The Mack) book, Inside Black Hollywood. It was published in 1980 and super hard to find although there are a couple of high priced copies on amazon. She dated Frank while she was filming The Mack.

From her writings, Frank comes across as a powerful, well respected man who had a good mind for business. Frank also wanted out of the game. He had left the game before to start a business as a clothing store owner ( he was known as a sharp dresser) but he stated that people in the game, his friends, etc. purposely avoided purchasing threads from his store because they wanted him back in the game. They didn't want him to succeed in business. They wanted him back in the streets.

This happens all the time.

I sometimes wonder if Frank had decided to leave town and start his business, could he have avoided being murdered? His story is extremely sad because he had alot of promise.

After learning of his death in Berkeley, Carol had a nervous breakdown and it took years for her to recover.

I wonder if Frank left any children behind...May God rest his soul.

Wow thanks for the info on frank ward. They have a feature on him on a site called http://panachereport.com/ under the black underworld tab. This site stated that after frank was killed, his brothers high tailed it outta oakland (back to new orleans people expect). His story will not be told because his family doesnt it want it told, I respect that right because i thought American Gangster was gonna cover him. But yea he was the biggest crime boss to come through oakland (bigger that felix mitchel n lil d). As mentioned on this thread, Ward was friends with legendary gangster Red Dillard Morrison. Alotta kingpins try to go legit but they never can fully complete their mission. Thats the equation: crime, make millions and go legit.

Technically speaking, you can write, do a book on the Wards, or anybody else - since they were public figures. You probably couldn't do interviews with family members, being that they won't contribute, but you can write about them all you want.
For example, The New York Times has a boatload of articles about William Terrell. And despite what his family members stated on this forum, Terrell did use the alias "Jimmy Terrell", as well as Goldfinger. A number of legal documents and arrest reports attest to that.
Speaking of which, Brooklyn's Finest - that movie that's been sitting on the shelf and was just released - screams like it's recounting something from the 1960s-1980s.

As Jimmy "Goldfinger" Terrell's former brother in law I can tell you during their careers neither one was on the street at the same time. when Jimmy got "hit" in December 1978 Nick had just been convicted and was in jail. Jimmy was one of the truly last stand up gangsters in Harlem

Hello Soapbox,
I know you were addressing Pete, but just to provide some information for you: Goldfinger Terrell was a major trafficker throughout the city between the 1960s and early 1970s. Several NY Times articles count him as one of the most notorious traffickers up to 1973. Goldfinger is alleged to have set the tone with distinguishing "packages"; in his case a yellow string was tying the heroin bundle. According to the Times article, several rivals cut into his profits by imitating his packages.
Goldfinger Terrell was found murdered around 1978. Authorities suspected that a rival killed him, in a quest to eliminate competition. The NY Times speculated then, that a number of dealers were feuding for dominance, after the conviction of Nicky Barnes.
Unlike the NY Post and Daily News, the Times has an accessible archive online. From 1975 to 1979, the paper listed the biggest black drug dealers (besides Nicky Barnes) as Frank Lucas, Claude Helton, and Robert Stepeney.
