This individual should not receive bail period, considering his training and position when he retired. I am also a former retired Captain with DOC and there is no excuse for this tragic shooting. I do have a couple of concerns regarding this issue. Did he have the weapon on his person or did he have to go outside to get it from his vehicle? Did he have a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon. He had been retired over 20 years from what I gather. I am also under the assumption that a similar incident involving him also occurred. If so, what was the outcome? Has he ever received counseling or therapy before? Is there someone in his past that may have been killed by someone who was texting while driving? Something had to set him off.
Some individuals after they retire from law enforcement find it hard to give up the uniform. I think some type of counseling would be in order to help them deal with retirement.
Now I would like to address the texting issue. Why didn't the father go out into the lobby and just call or text the babysitter? I don't understand this. This entire incident could have been avoided. I know when I was a kid when our parents went to a movie, they did not have a cell phone or texting capabilities. So what did they do in case of an emergency? They told the babysitter to call the police or call the movie theatre and tell the employee what movie they were seeing and have a message delivered to call home ASAP. That was it. It's a shame how we have let the way we communicate control so much of our lives.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his widow and daughter. May God be with you both and comfort you through this tragedy.
