No sooner had viewers taken in the long, graphic lesbian sex scenes in the French coming-of-age drama "Blue Is the Warmest Color" last year than they were treated to "Stranger by the Lake," a homoerotic thriller set in a gay cruising site, at which men could be seen pleasuring each other and themselves with unsettling frankness.

It's interesting that these two superior, foreign films are the ones which get singled out for "desperately" trying to shock audiences when you've had those stateside products like the "Saw" and "Hostel" series. Not to mention all the perfectly mainstream movies with tons of violence.

This is merely about the writer's homosexual problem ("unsettling frankness.") It's not about shock, per se. There's lots of movies desperate to shock.
