The Cinema Center on West Housatonic that you seem to wax poetic about was horrible! Paper thin walls enabled you to hear the movie next door AND you also had to deal with patrons who had no courtesy towards anyone but themselves. When I heard that place was out of business, I was not sad one bit. The glorious movie palaces of North Street will never return. The Palace was supposedly in such bad disrepair that the city said they had to tear it down. Are they saying it's cheaper to do what they're doing to this Beacon than repair the Palace? We'll never know. It was a beautiful place if it had been kept up. Same goes with the Senior Center/Capitol. It was my favorite and it will never be anything other than a glorified nursing home without beds. The Showplace was okay, really 70's without the charm of the grand old movie palaces. Don't forget The Paris, which is now the Barrington Stage. The Cinema Center killed the North Street cinemas and the Mall killed the Cinema Center. Payback is a b**ch isn't it? The Beacon, like most anything in Pittsfield, will probably stall and the funding will be lost. Boo hoo. Private investment should pay for this project and if they're so positive they won't need to have the taxpayers pay for it, then why aren't they asking the chains of movie operators themselves to kick in the money? Too afraid to give up their "poo-poo" art house appearance? |

If this is such a great project why is the developer having to come begging to the City and finagling with tax credits that should be used to promote real employment growth not just entertainment for a few who don't have their own DVD players. For $22 million you could buy everyone in Pittsfield their own DVD player.

And you'd still have more than $20 million left over to pay for popcorn, sodas, and even dinner and a suite at the Crown Plaza for every resident of Pittsfield. $22,000,000 divided by 43,500 =$505.75/person |

I nominate YOU, Allen. And look, there's already a street in front of City Hall named after you! |

Walls can be sound proof if that's all that ails your opposition to renew them there was assortment and parking i have pics of the Palace and Capitol right before the wrecking ball came down. it needed minor repairs and paint, but back taxes folded it and the city land grabbed it instead of helping the tenants .....click here www.thomaswfontaine.spaces.live.com/ |

Can someone explain to me why we keep using this fund for the museum? It's like the museum thinks they are entitled to every penny of this 10 million which we are supposed to use for economic development. Granted, I know the museum is very important, but we have more pressing issues, such as an eroding tax base, the mass exodus of high paying jobs, and the lack of interest to grow business in our area. And yet, the City Council keeps shelling out seemingly every time you turn your shoulder for this enterprise. Shouldn't we be using this money on, oh I don't know, enterprises that will bring hundred of high-paying jobs to Pittsfield???

And I would like to see this project begin, but not at the expense of every penny we have. And we don't have that much to spare to begin with...

I'm currently getting my undergrad degree in Political Science so one day I will run and will have the background to actually run a city properly. Pittsfield deserves no less than a competent mayor who is willing to avoid Delgallo's and make decisions based on the prospects of bettering a city, not to take care of idiot friends who "WORKED AT THE G.E." I don't want a mayor whom everyone word out of his mouth is "SPICE IS AAAABSOLUTELY FANTAAAASTIC!!!" I want a mayor who can bring the population back to 60,000 by redeveloping the Stanley Business Park through an aggressive pursuit of nanotechnology and biotechnology. Maybe I'll have to be the person to do that someday... |

You are on the wrong thread moron. |

If we are going to spend the money, why not a multi-facet venue. A place for movies, music, arts
and dance. Let us give an opportunity toward true inner growth for our community. A voter survey for this endeavor would be very beneficial. Particularly for the younger individuals in our community. Say yes to GROWTH, say no to MEDIOCRITY. |

Thomas, believe me, those buildings could've been restored. The El Capitain was just as bad and it was restored into an amazing grand movie palace. Take a trip out to LA to see it. The owners of those fallen properties could've saved them either begging the city for help or contacting a branch of theatrical historical society or any number of avenues. Instead, letting them go gave the city an excuse for a few more handicap parking spots at the Capitol and a private lot for Legacy Bank. |

Pittsfield's civic leaders have a long, proud history of destroying City landmarks. One of the most important was the architecturally beautiful marble train station. |
