Is there a way for a new auther?

The publishers guide advises me to advertise myself, to get publicity any way I can ( going on the Big Brother is I good idea!). Another suggestion is to go to posh parties, drink a lot and to flirt with a publisher. But I detest the Big Brother, havent been invited to any super posh parties and even if I did I would probably have nothing suitable to wear. Am I right to assume that everybody else out there who has written a book is more sociable and better connected than I am? Perhaps I am just being a bit insecure about the whole thing? Should I be reaching out and making new connections with the outside world?
I always thought that to be an author meant writing, but recently I have discovered that it is more about selling. Something which unfortunately I am not very good at. Somewhere between holding down a job because one has to eat and bringing up my son I am losing the motivation for trying to publish my work and beginning to accept that hard work doesnt necessarily means success. But deep inside I know that even this acceptance is wrong. My mum used to tell me that where is the will there is is the way but I just can not see it. Can you?
