Yes, the American apathy machines, the TV and the Internet, along with the Fascist's dumbing down of our educational system has done a good job. Are these people, who do not read, the same people who constantly support America's Fascist administration and Dictator Bush?

How is this considered news? But seriously, I think it is more important what is read, than how much is read. The ol' quality vs quantity argument.

Perhaps you missed that NOTHING was read? Seen in that context, does the material that wasn't read really seem all that important?

Well....if you had READ the story, instead of just the headline, you would have seen that the story reports on the reading habits of Americans. Not just who reads nothing vs who reads something.

And perhaps you shouldn't assume I didn't read it. I was commenting on a specific part of the article.

I am a university professor and teach introductory biology to freshman at a public university. I did a survey of some 250 studens' reading habits about 5 years ago. A full 60% had not read a single book over the 4 mo summer holiday break! They also had trouble distinguishing a 'national' newspaper from the campus paper .. which is about 5 pages in length with little real news. Based on this data, I was surprised that the percentage of non-readers in the AP poll was so small.
