And what is sad is that I hope this does not encourage the child to write more of it thinking she's actually going to do something with it. Write it yes, share it with family and friends but don't think you're going to be the next big thing.
This is a jaded world.
There's so much BAD poetry out there people don't give a crap about it anymore. Unless you can find a way to USE it; it's considered nothing by itself.

I think her accomplishment was just that an accomplishment. And for someone to say and post something so silly is just that, silly. She should be proud of it and she can do something with it. We are taught to write because it can help us in life. You never know she may grow to be the next great author. It all could have started from her standing there reading that one poem she wrote. Writing is a lost art form. These days so is reading. ( but thats another story ) And the bulk of people that care less about poetry are the ones that are not schooled enough to understand it anyway. Even if it is just poems, if she wants to use it to make something out of herself. By God shes got my vote. and I bet she can do it to.

Believe me, it was not intended to discourage. Personally I agree with you. Good writing and music are disappearing art forms. But I know all too well a friend of mine-not me- who is truly and artist in the strict sense of the word and doesn't go for modern day 'digitals'. He is finding it very hard to get any work with his art degree. I'm not saying don't try. All I'm saying is don't expect to make a go of it. If you do, you are lucky indeed.
