John Lovett (February 20, 1761 - August 12, 1818) was an American politician, poet, lawyer and an army Major in era of the War of 1812, from New York. Among his poetry is the long poem "Washington's birthday: an historical poem", written in 1812.
Offspring of Mars
Lovett's best-known poem describes the War of 1812 as:
The deformed, rickety offspring of Mars,
Begotten, in a drunken frolic in the stews...
With a Hagstrumpet Democracy."
