A painting stolen from Zurich in 2008 and worth millions of euro was found on Wednesday in Belgrade.
Serbian police found a painting by the post-impressionist Paul Cezanne in Belgrade on Wednesday night.
So far it has not been confirmed which painting was recovered but it is most likely to be “Boy in the Red Vest”, which was stolen from Zurich together with works by Degas, Van Gogh and Monet in 2008.
The Monet and Van Gogh paintings were found soon after the robbery but the search for Cezanne’s Boy in the Red Vest and Degas’ Viscount Lepic and His Daughters continued.
Three persons suspected of stealing the painting were arrested on Wednesday and the police are still searching for the fourth person.
The operation, which was carried out in Belgrade and Cacak, was organised by Serbia's Agency for the Fight Against Organized Crime and the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime.
Police cooperated with colleagues from several countries and the operation was prepared over several months.
A Swiss expert is expected to come to Belgrade and confirm whether it is the piece by the French painter, which is considered a national treasure of Switzerland.
According to the E. G. Bührle Collection, the museum from which the work was stolen, it is worth about $91m.
