Review: 'In the Heights,' by Lin-Manuel Miranda

When the city has a blackout in a sweltering night of a July 4th weekend, the people in the uptown barrio under the George Washington Bridge can be heard haunting the darkness.

I saw the performance on Saturday 3/8 at 8pm. Acting was great, Dancing was great, Characters were great. Singing and Song writing was great. But the entire show is forgettable –
What killed it for me was:
*The amateur set design
*The story was too dry and long-winded with no real substance to it. You are always left with the big “What?” in your mind whenever the characters find a solution to their problems because the solutions were just very unrealistic for today’s day and age.
*The Hip-Hop dancing was incredible but it needed a drop of cultural dancing that would have shown the diverse Latino cultures found in the musical. Waving the flags from different countries was not cutting it for me. Go into any Latino community and you will find a mixture of traditional cultural dancing along with hip-hop. For Broadway, we needed to see Salsa with a Twist.
As a whole, it does not reflect the “Heights” of the past five years, more like from 10-20 years age. Sorry to say,“In The Heights” should have stayed Off Broadway.

love this show!!!!! best new musical. can't wait to see it pick up a few tonys in June! I saw it during previews and I will be back this Friday to see it again!

In the Heights was fun, and very entertaining! The substance of the story was to tell the modern immigrant story and the hopes and dreams of these people. This was very artfully achieved with impecable authenticity. Who cares if the solution to their problems was a bit far fetched! If you can look beyond that it is an awesome show. Loved it!
