Why celebrate Russification of Ukraine?

Does Ukraine need to do anything jointly with Russia which will certainly spin this as a "unification" gesture.

Let Russia have its own celebrations and Ukraine can have its own as well.

Nikolai Gogol, is know to the world as a "Russian" writer because Russia for many, many decades presented him as a Russian. Russia tried to misinform the world that perhaps his greatest novel --and one of Hemingway's favorites-- was about "Russian" cossacks.

Just as the great Irish and Scottish writers who, owing to English imperialism, had to write in English-- Gogol had to write in Russian because of Russian imperialism.

Ukraine can celebrate Gogol very well without Russia's assistance.

This quote is another fine example of Russian chauvinist drivel. Any linguist knows that Russian and Ukrainian spoken at any level of sophistication require interpretation.

Ukrainians in Ukraine have been conditioned to speak Russian to Russians so the racist Russian chauvinist thinks he is hearing Ukrainian --when it is merely Russian "Ukrainian style" being spoken by a Ukrainian.

Serious linguists know Ukrainian is a very distinct language as does any intellectual who knows both Ukrainian and Russian. Anyone who does not know the other requires interpretation.
