Excerpts from an article- source google news entitled, Numero Unos - A Survey Of The Top Hit Films: 1960s By Rajiv Vijayakar, Jul 3, 2012 - 03:25 IST

The tie between two films both starring the new young heartthrob Rajesh Khanna at the end of the decade heralded a paradigm shift to come in the '70s in Hindi cinema. Kaka (as he came to be known) became the new icon, riding in on the wings of the Kishore Kumar chartbuster Mere Sapnon Ki Rani from Aradhana. Raj Khosla's Do Raaste, the less costly film of the two, matched Aradhana in box-office grading and the actor formed super-successful pairings with Mumtaz and Laxmikant-Pyarelal with it just as he struck a fruitful association with Sharmila Tagore, director Shakti Samanta and R.D.Burman, who had assisted Aradhana's composer, his father S.D.Burman.

The two films heralded the shifting of these two directors best known for crime-related genres to socials, but most importantly, with his songs in both these films, Kishore Kumar became a frontline playback singer for the first time and the prime voice for Rajesh Khanna, now touted as India's first “Superstar” and a Phenomenon.

He didn't ride on the success of mere sapnon ki. I don't like the way people never understand Kaka. Abhijitji, the way you said how kaka characterized roles, how he tend to perform different roles we see in day to day lives, how he maintained his ada, spontaneity, dedication, how he is deep soulful human being who is emotional but very large hearted, why such person is heavily hated and critized by almost everyone? Media, Industry, Common people, Everyone. He is far better human being than any of those hypocrites! Why is this happening? They all say how big he is as a superstar often, but why don't they speak of what a great actor he was? Are people blind? Late Rituparno Gosh called him limited actor?

The way he emoted in Roop tera is one of the big reasons for Aaradhana's success.

I read many articles saying his contribution is much less than anyone in the industry. Without him, there won't be any industry. He took it to another level. Then, there's also other thing that says he's the least popular of all in the hindi cinema industry. Are they crazy? It proves most of the indians are idiots. They used to be sensible but in the way of copying western, they became mediocre themselves.

Obviously you've met him and who can be a better judge than someone who has never met him.

Please share your experiences with us how you came to this judgement.

What a load of rubbish - Mere Sapno ki Rani and Sharmila made Aaradhana a success. Rajesh khanna rode on the back of that success until it was found out that he is a mediocre level actor.
