So I'm starting ballet soon and the major thing that I'm freaking out about: what people will think of me.
See, I'm afraid that I'll be made fun of because I'm not /exactly/ what some would call ballet material. I'm 5'4 and 145 lbs. All pictures I've seen of ballet dancers they're all skinny and I'm terrified that I just won't fit in (pun not intended).

Tell me what you think I should do? I think I'd be most comfortable having a private class with no other students around me.

don't worry about what people think some advice is to work on the splits and touching your toes everyday, so you can be flexible. ballet can also help you to lose weight. You should prabbably sign up for several beggining teen/adult ballet classes a week which many ballet schools offer. remmber alhough, you may hav already found your school, always make sure it's the right one for you. I If you want to get en pointe, become really good, and/or stay in shape i strongly suggest taking ballet at LEAST twice a week, although I STRONGLY suggest taking ballet 3 or 4 times a week, so you can loose a couple extra pounds each week, and get en pointe faster, and get better. I suggest trying at least three weeks of classes, if for some reason you still feel insecure or embarrases (which you shouldn't) ask your teacher about private lessons. Good luk, I really hope this helps, any othr question please just ask and remember, NEVER be afraid to ask your ballet teacher about ANYTHING.

Okay - thank you, so very much! I've decided to wait until next year because I'll be busy with extracurricular activities in school this year.
Wish me luck!

So glad I could help and good luck! Also to prepare yourself for next year I strongly recommend taking a recreational summer ballet program to prepare you for next fall annd keep stretching throughout the year so, come next year you'll be nice and flexible for dance class. Happy dancing!!!

I'm 13 years old and have been doing ballet for a little over a year. I love it so much! It doesn't matter what anyone says about you, if you want to do something and you have a passion for it, DO IT!!! Hope I helped!

Don't worry seriously some people in my ballet class aren't even near skinny ! I mean I am but that's just metabbolism ! Or however you spell it ! And fitting in isn't a problem if there mean its because your better than them they'd be jealous I'm sure you will be fine don't let the media take an impact on you it's not good ! It's about talent not looks !:) hope this helps ! Xx
