is ballet a good way to tone up your body? if so, why?

also I don't know why, but I have a sudden urge to start ballet!! it seems like a lot of fun and I love the elegance and beauty of it - extremely inviting :)

only problem is I'm 18 and I'm not particularly flexible AT ALL, should I bother? will i find it too difficult?
also, I assume beginner classes will be filled with younger children - am I right?

just to clarify, I don't wish to pursue ballet beyond enjoyment and keeping fit.

thanks in advance for any advice you can give me :)
