I have a problem with my knees in ballet, and i was wondering if anyone else has this problem also. My knees never appear straight. That is the honest truth. No matter how hard i try, or how much i or someone else puches them, they literally do not ever appear perfectly straight. This is a problem for moves such as arabesque, develope, grand battement - pretty much all moves where the leg is in the air straight. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem, or anyone anyone else knows has this problem, and how to improve my knees.

I have that same exact problem also. But my knees appear to be even more bent on pointe. I don't know if this is the same for you. The physical therapist said that I have to increase my flexibility in the arch of my foot so I can get my knees straight. I also asked my ballet teacher why my knees appear to be bent. She said my knees are hyperflexed. If you ever heard of hyperextentions which make your knees to look like they bend backwards and looks very pretty on dancers but can cause lots of injuries. Well hyperflexed is when the muscle in the back of your knee is short, which is the exact oppisite of hyperextention. I haven't figured out anything except to keep on stretching. Like sitting down and bending fowards. I also looked something on the internet I don't know if it's really safe or not. But, you put like a phone book or a thick book and put your feet on it and bend fowards and if you want SLOWLY push on your knees to feel the back of your knees stretch.

i used to have hypoextended knees (the opposite of hyperextended) and i worried that it would stay that way forever. For me, all i had to do was to stretch and give it about 3 years to get my knees straight

oh ok thatnks at least its good to know that my case is not unheard of! i think i have hyperflexed knees (i have been told by a teacher that my knees are the opposite of a girl in her class who has hyperextended knees.)

but i had hypoextended knees AND a really really good arch and my legs didn't look straight before

ok i think its just for some things my knees look bent like when they are in a position staying still (first, fith etc) they look straight but in a lunge or jump or arabesque they are bent and i am straightening them as far as they can go...

I have the same problem as well. I was wondering if you can still fix it at the age of 15, or if its something u can only fix when ur younger?
I find that sometimes when I stretch, It gets better, but the day after, it just becomes hypoextended again.

Well..I also have this problem, but it has gotten much better. I used to have consistently bent knees and feet that weren't anything to boast about. So, not expecting significant positive results, I daily began to do tendus, A TON OF THEM, on my own, making sure to roll-through my metetarsels (sp?) and pointe as hard as I could without sickling. This exercise greatly strengthened my feet and ankels. Also, my knees became straighter, esp on pointe, because my feet/ankles were stronger (weird how that worked!). Another plus of tons of CORRECT tendus -- doing tendus correcly while REALLY CONCENTRATING ON USING THE INNER THIGHTS AND NOT THE QUADS is really great for slimming and toning the thighs. Good luck, and remeber that it takes a few weeks of A LOT!!!! of tendus to get significant results, but it is so worth it:)
Don't give up! It's amazing what hard work, good training, and hours of dancing can accomplish!

Does anyone know how to keep their knees from becoming hypoextended again? Cause I will do many stretches, which makes my legs quite straight, but after a while, like a few hours or so, my knees will hypoextended again =(.
Thanks for the tendu advice, ill definitly try it! Just one question, how much a day should I do them?

I have this problem and so does another dancer. We had a ballet teacher come in from California and she told us that we walk incorrectly, stand incorrectly, point incorrectly, etc. We've developed a bunch of bad habits to compensate for the fact we have less than perfect feet. However, if we had worked on all the stuff above and more we would not have had to compensate and thus would not have made the problem worse.

Since working on those issues we have improved the way our knees look and so on by 100%

Also having the same problem, I was offered to go to a physical therapist to help make my knees hyperextended. I decided it against it at the time although now I wish I would have gone. There are also surgeries that can lengthen your legs. Those are risky, but I did know a ballerina who had it done to fit in.

surgery for something like this is nuts! i have hypo-extended knees too, and i am working to improve my pointe so they will appear straighter. obviously i find it frustrating, but i really don't think surgery, especially if it is dangerous, is the right answer.
what i would like to know though is if it is possible to "cure" knees that always appear bent by working on them a lot or is it something you are stuck with for life? and if it's the former, any ideas what stretches help?

i have the same problem but I'm a gymnast and my routines don't look to good with my knees. i don't know if its safe but we put our legs on top of something high and ask people to sit on our improved, but only a little. any suggestions?
