Powell Advises Obama to ignore critics; take your time on Afghanistan

*According to information received from Team Elevation, today, for the first time, Former Secretary of State, General Colin Powell, went on the record to share the advice he gave President Obama regarding Afghanistan. He spoke exclusively with Roland Martin on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Powell's comments to "take your time" are in stark contrast to the reported suggestions that Cheney has given. According to Powell: This is a very difficult one for him. And it isn't just a one-time decision. This is the decision that will have consequences for the better part of his administration. So Mr. President, don't get pushed by the left to do nothing; don't get pushed by the right to do everything. You take your time and you figure it out. Powell is right. America has the find the right way of pulling out of Afghanistan because we will not win that war.

Work on the best strategy of pulling out safely.

I always thought Powell was a sensable man. Nice to see people put their "party" aside and give the right support to whichever American is running the country. Too many of us want the President to fail if he is not the part of the party you voted for! How about America first people?!

Powell's advice is excellent, if you're retired and sitting at home. If you're one of the 66,000 Soldiers stranded in that free fire zone, then it sucks.
But I agree with Inshia the Talking Mule.
If you don't know what you're doing, bring them home now. It will be better fighting them on our soil. Less whining.

Oh we can win in 2 weeks if we wanted. I saw the Highway of Death leading out of Kuwait City the day after the Republican Guard tried to evac, and trust me, when we want to we can definitely win.
Tell the Pakistanis to shoot anything coming their way and then VX the mountains. No US Casualties and the enemy would be neutralized. A very strong message to say the least.
But can we kiss their ass and kill them too? No.

The American Military has the deadliest equipment of any military. But we can't just go shoot up the place like we did in WW2. Its more of the Vietnam style fighting and we lost that War. The Jihadist have studied Vietnam and they know that the American public will soon get tired of Americans dying for no reason in a country that doesn't want us over there.

Afghanistan has Militias just sitting on their hands cause Americans are on the ground in that country. Let the Afghans fight the Taliban. Not the government because they are corrupt but you have the Northern alliance wo hate the Taliban. America should have let the Northern alliance rule the country. It would be peaceful now because the Northern Alliance would have killed every Taliban and al Qaeda jihadist that they could catch. These guys would lock up hundreds of prisoners in train cars and let them smother to death, but Americans stopped them from doing this practice.

You statement was that America couldn't win. We could. It's the limp wristed media that would turn American discontent against the war, not the losses of our military. Remember in World War 2, Americans cheered the firebombing of Dresden that kiled hundreds of thousands. We are capable.
Two problems with the Northern Alliance plan.
First, we would have to support them, both logistically and militarily. Alone the Taliban would crush them, as they have done in the past. They really aren't that good of a fighting force. Plus if you get them in the mountains to the East, they really aren't good. They are OK in their homeland of the North, but the mountains are a different story.
Second, if the Northern Alliance did take control of the country, we would be installing Narco Warlords into positions of power. They run the opium trade of the North. How would Obama justify replacing a regime, even as corrupt and impotent as Karzai is with drugdealers? Bad PR.

I would pull the troops out of Afghanistan, leaving 20,000 troops and airframes at an expanded Bagram as a punishment force, and focus on Pakistan. It would be very bad if Pakistan falls. Let the Taliban retake control of Afghanistan with the firm knowledge that we are watching and will bring the smackdown on any future terrorist affiliations. the Taliban in turn could then return to stepping on the necks of the Afghani people and burning the opium fields. If Al Queida returns in force to set up training camps, we can smoke them with Predators from Bagram. Set Karzai up in a mansion on Maui, like Marcos was.
Everybody wins. No American casualties. Limited cost.
