Yes, Gogol wrote in the metropolitan language of imperial oppressor, and he upheld the Tsarist regime -- for which he was roundly criticized by the great literary critic, Bielinskii.

Gogol was the descendant of Ukrainian Cossacks, and his early works, Taras Bulba and Evenings on a Farm in Dikanka, were written in Russian. They were also written about Ukrainian themes, and his characters used some Ukrainian words.

Gogol's most famous works, the Inspector General and Dead Souls, were set in St. Petersburg and written on purely Russian themes. In the sum of all things, Gogol was a Russian writer of Ukrainian background.

Gogol was not a Ukrainian nationalist and he had to write in Russian to reach his audience. He did not see the potential in Ukrainian that Taras Shevchenko and Lesia Ukraina did, and because of that, he lost out on an opportunity to make an outstanding contribution to Ukraine's literary language.

If Ukrainian language was reduced to the status of that of "rural illiterate savages," it was only because of the thoroughly repressive policies of the arrogant, stupid, urban-yet-parochial type of Russian Tsarist official that Gogol loved to skewer in his books. When Shevchenko proved the literary potential of Ukrainian language, Tsar Alexander acted quickly to make certain that it could not be developed any further, with an Ukaz of 1863 that forbade the printing of any Ukrainian books. This way, any real education would take place in Russia, and Ukraine's Cossack elite, Gogol's people, would become Russified.

This type of colonial/superior attitude still survives, which is why Ukraine needs to think carefully before partnering up with a Russian "brother" who considers him to be nothing more than a yokel.

America's greatest writer, Mark Twain, did exactly that. In Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck spoke in nothing but the colloqial dialect.

Gogol wrote in standard language of educated persons and was not an idiot to write in a rural dialect.
To many Ukrainians were at highest ranks in the Empire. Does it mean one Ukrainians suppressed others?
It does not matter where it's written. Turgenev wrote almost all of his novels in France. But he is still Russian writer as Gogol.
Gogol was a Russian writer of Russian background because Ukraine did not exist at all. It was Malorossia and nation name was Maloross. The stupid term Ukraine was invented much later for political reasons.

So what? By your reasoning, "Russia" didn't exist until the 18th century, because until then, it was "Muscovia." "Muscovia" was changed to "Russia" for political reasons as well.

Take a linguistics class. Ruthenian was not a dialect, but a language in its own right, used by the Lithuanian chancellery in written documents, used by theologians and statesmen. The Treaty of Pereyaslav, which united Ukraine and Russia, was written in Russian and Ruthenian. Translators were needed by both sides to conclude the negotiations.

Taras Shevchenko took this language to its next level, poetry, and when he succeeded, Tsar Alexander responded -- not by encouraging literacy or learning, but by trying to legislate this literary language out of existence. If Ukrainian became the spoken language of peasants only, it is because of the savage oppression which made the Tsars infamous.

My only question is; "When will Russians living in Russia get indoor plumbing and hot running water."

Maybe in the year 2090?

before 1812 Russians learnt French language - France Empire disappeared as state
before 1945 Russians learnt German language - Germany disappeared as state

If Americans bred like rats, we would have 50 billion people here as well. But in the real world, when people of other nations do business with each other..nation to nation, Enlish is the default langauge.

This quote expresses so eloquently the racist Russian chauvinist attitude, expressed by so many Russians, from so many different locations, on so many occasions, including recently by Putin himself, that Ukraine should avoid associating with.
You are the first chauvinist, nationalist and a real NAZI in here. And all of your ideas are nationalistic based on the grounds that Ukraine is the hub of the Universe and existed before the Big Bang.

Wrong.
Now in here we have many job adds where an applicant is required to know Mandarin or Cantonize. And that's exactly for business. And this tendency grows and grows...

You could be correct about that Russian. Russians probably would be much more happy with a STRONG LEADER who likes to see tanks roll past Red Square much more than to have indoor plumbing. I guess that is the reason so many Russians seek visa's to the west yes? Becouse they want decent living conditions or becouse they want a strong leader who makes billions off of Russian rescources? You tell me.

In the meantime I am going to enjoy living in a country with one of the highest living standards on this planet.:)

No, that's I am living in that country :)

And don't care about indoor plumbing, outdoor plumbing, russian nationalism, ukrainian nationalism, swedish homosexuals, etc. What I do care about is cascade Premium, Crown Lager and Hop Thief and, of course, good wine.

Your posts smack of supremacist and racist Russian chauvinism. Are you another product of Russia's neofascist educational system?
