As an amateur photographer myself the law really hinders photography.

In New York City you can’t even take a picture with the Empire State Building in the background unless you want to get sued.

There is no way anyone will know for sure if everything you take a picture of is legal or not?

The best way to get around this is learn how to take a picture from the hip with a fast lens.

I have never had any problem at all by doing this. In the olden days it was called street photography. I have a Nikon D-300 and it’s not a small camera.

My advice is have fun and take a picture of anything you feel like, but blend in. Don’t become obvious.

If you are legal, stand on the sidewalk and take your photos. Also get pictures of the guard for your lawyer, and have a small tape recorder running. Maybe have a second photographer help you. When the guard threatens you, call 911. If he touches you, fall to the ground "injured." Bullies are easy to deal with. Not very manly, but it works.

Use this link, go to the bottom of the page to find the photographers rights. Read it then print a couple of copies to keep in your camera bag. If you run into a problem, give them a copy and then take the pictures. Threaten to sue if you feel you must. I doubt the security guards know the law, they're just doing what the property owners tell them to do.

This nonsense is ABSOLUTELY not true. Did you not read the article you were commenting on?

If you are really interested I'll get you the facts?

It's common knowledge though.

Oh, please. Common knowledge? There are 108,190 images of the Empire State building on Flickr - more being added today and every day. All these people got sued? By who?
It's also "common knowledge" that if you keep frowning, your face will freeze that way. Doesn't make it true.

I'm not frowning dear.

Sorry, but you don't know what you are talking about.

There are many people that have a picture of the empire state building in the background yes.

I think you are kind of slow so I'll pass. I'm not go to waste my time.

You can do the research yourself.

Have a nice day.

Waianae is right.
Take a picture of the guard, take your photo, and tell him to f-l-uck off.
If he threatens or touches you, call 911.

While visiting Kona a while back, I arrived early enuf to catch a nice sunrise and then...a surprise for a new visitor! Here comes a TSA agent questioning my actions. He tells me that no one can take pictures around the airport area and said if my friend wanted to use some pixs, to go send a request to the govt and they can supply them. Post 911 jitters perhaps...
