Penn is an idiot and a skirt lifter sniffing around the presidency.

I have also got to admit that his comment "the world today is not going to tolerate any ludicrous and archaic commitment to colonialist ideology." rings with irony.

Oh! I see now! If Spicoli says so....it must be right. I take back everything I have ever said or believed. We Americans stand firmly behind Sean Penn. He speaks for every single one of us....That is why he is so important. That is why we have appointed him to be our ambassador to the world. He is no doubt on the phone advising our President right now.

Why is Penn supporting Argentina's colonialist intentions over an island where the people do not want to join Argentina? Which Great Britain / United Kingdom controlled most of the time since 1765, and Argentina controlled for only a year?

The Falklands are hundreds of miles from Argentina, while Uruguay is 0 miles from Argentina. If proximity makes the Falklands part of Argentina, then by that logic Argentina should be claiming Uruguay too. Why the hypocrisy?

Let's have a referendum to resolve this issue of "colonialism" !

Really? Let's see:

"bearing in mind ... and the interests of the population of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas)."

- UN Resolution 2065

If you want to ignore the desires of the people who actually live on the Falklands, then who is the colonialist?

Guys don’t pay much attention to “Jon of Arc”. He is either a Mexican trying to develop some empathy on this forum, or a Mexican with no self esteem, trying to make a point with no arguments.

You are getting to optimistic! With all the budgeting cuts and the messed up economy, what I see is they sending soldiers by America Airlines (economy class) to South Africa and then, swimming from there.

My Canadian friend, you are getting too attached to the UK flipping, deceitful arguments. They shift, change or magically transform these arguments constantly. They have done it constantly since this conflict starter in 1833. I thought you guys known they better. UK has a catalog of double standards and modifies its speech and the agenda driven by only one premise, which is to sustain as long as they could their presence in the south Atlantic while sucking resources.

They didn’t care much about the Islanders before. The islanders actually became citizens of the UK after the war, in 1983. Before that, islander had a lot more commercial and social relationship with us than with the UK. The argument of the self determination is fired up by UK since not too long ago, and we think that this is happening because they are losing ground at the UN and the international arena.

Otherwise, how can you explain the “circus” they are building with the ships, submarines, and the high tone declaration accusing a country that was victim of colonialism of colonialist?

How does ignoring their rights... in fact ignoring them completely... address their interests?
The principle of self-determination relates to "peoples." Examples:

"To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, and to take other appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace."
- UN Charter, Chapter 1, Article 1, part 2

"All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development."
- International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 1

Denying the inhabitants of the Falkland Islands their status as a people is not supported by international law.
Banaba Island is part of the Republic of Kiribati now, and not claimed by the UK. Regarding Diego Garcia, it had no permanent inhabitants when discovered by the Spanish explorer Diego García de Moguer in the 16th century and remained so until settled as a French colony in 1793. The involuntary relocation decision remains in litigation. If you claim that the "Kelpers" have no right to self-determination because they were "implanted", why do you change your tune with Diego Garcia?
