Ex-military leader on trial in Argentina

One of Argentina's most feared former military leaders goes on trial today on charges of kidnapping, torturing and killing left-wing militants during the 1976-83 dictatorship.

Can someone please explain why one segment of the military would torture and kill innocents, then dump their bodies in the street where other parts of the military would then bury the bodies in unmarked graves? Why wouldn't the first group just make the bodies disappear?
