Sumner County is currently caring for 44 dogs seized in a recent animal cruelty case. However, a judge says the dog's owner must pay for their continuing care and the bill is almost $15,000 dollars.
Brittany Bergez has until May 12th to pay the costs. In addition to that, the court also ruled Bergez will have to pay an additional $7,000 every 15 days thereafter.
The county is utilizing a new law that removes the costs associated with caring for seized animals from taxpayers and places that burden on the pet owners accused in the crime.
Assistant District Attorney, William Lamberth says, "We'll put them on notice that we intend to have a hearing on the first possible date to require them to pay for that daily care and that way, the taxpayers of Sumner county don't have to pick up the costs the offender should be picking up."
Brittany Bergez faces several counts of animal cruelty.
She also has written a bunch of bad checks and "borrowed" a horse trailer to give to the guy she wrote the bad checks to. Charges are pending on that one.
What kind of a moron would pull a stunt like that? What is even more disturbing is that there are people who have come out publicly to defend her as nothing less than a saint who takes in strays and nurses them back to health. She takes is strays because they don't cost anything and she can turn around and sell them hopefully before they die of neglect.
Anyone that publicly defends known puppy millers should have their own integrity called into question.

Direct quote from the news channel 5 website on the puppy mill bust April 8, 2008
"The (Bergez) puppy mill raid was one of several visits sheriff's deputies made to local (Westmoreland) breeders.
Detectives plan to make unannounced trips to local (Westmoreland) breeders to make sure animals are treated humanely.
More charges may be filed against other kennels."
More charges?- other kennels?

Bergez faces additional charges
BY KATRINA CORNWELL/Staff • April 30, 2008
A Westmoreland woman who made headlines recently after the Sumner County Sheriff’s Department seized 44 dogs from her kennel operation, and later arrested her on seven counts of animal cruelty, has been arrested for stealing a horse trailer.
Brittany Bergez, 30, has been charged with one count of theft over $1,000. Last week, she was charged with five counts of writing bad checks under $500. Three attempts to contact Bergez were unsuccessful by this newspaper’s deadline.
On April 22, the District Attorney’s Office contacted the Sumner County Sheriff's Office about a complaint from Loreen Hallsrisch involving the theft of a trailer. Hallsrisch told deputies she loaned a $1,900 horse trailer to Bergez several weeks ago for three days, according to a Sumner County Sheriff’s Department affidavit.
The affidavit said Hallsrich called Bergez about the trailer, and Bergez said she would return it, but didn’t.
Hallsrich later saw the horse trailer at Farm Depot in Oak Grove, where she spoke with the storeowner, Pat Crowder. Crowder told Hallsrich the trailer was given to him as collateral against checks that Bergez had written, the affidavit said. Hallsrisch told detectives Crowder advised her that the trailer now belonged to him.
During an interview with detectives, Crowder retold the story about Bergez giving him the trailer as collateral for the checks.
Crowder told detectives that he asked Bergez about the trailer, and she said she owned it.
Crowder also told detectives Bergez asked him on April 16 to hold the trailer as collateral and that she would be back by 5:30 p.m. to pick up the trailer and have money to cover the checks. Bergez didn’t return.
Crowder told detectives he assumed the trailer was his according to a document signed by Bergez giving him the trailer if she failed to pay the bad checks.
A detective spoke with Bergez, who admitted to having borrowed the trailer from Hallsrisch and giving it to Crowder as collateral for the worthless checks, according to the affidavit.
Bergez did sign a paper giving Crowder ownership of the trailer if she failed to pay the checks, the affidavit states.
Her bond on the theft charge has been set at $250, and she is scheduled to appear before Sumner County General Sessions Judge Jim Hunter on all counts at 9 a.m. May 14.

I wonder how North Central Telephone Cooperative would feel about the Ghazis using their employer's e-mail address as their contact information on Laura's cutepuppiesareus.com ?
A lot of employers have strict rules about using their company's e-mail to conduct business for personal reasons. Especially when the business is as controversial as cutepuppiesareus.com . One would think that the Ghazi's could at least use a personal e-mail address and not get their employer involved.

Once again I find myself in the thick of things and feel irresistably compelled to interject a small bit of sanity into the insanity. Mr. Fisher has apparently been busy supplying this forum with the same accusations with which he has slandered the Ghazis on other sites. Perhaps he should provide some proof of his accusations, such as records from his veterinarian, rather than continue to post such hate filled rants expecting his "audience" to swallow his words whole just because he types them on a keyboard and sends them into cyberspace. Perhaps he should reconsider which veterinarian he uses as the stated $1000 seems to me to be an exhorbitant amount to pay for a simple ear infection. Perhaps he should also spend less time in his angry tirades on the web and more time enjoying the company of his wife (if he has one) and the dog he professes to care so much about.
At the risk of being accused of repetition:
I am not a member of the Ghazi Family, immediate or extended (not a cousin of any degree). Nor am I a friend or acquaintance etc.
I am someone who is interested in the truth, which this Person is apparently not interested in providing. Posting half truths and hate filled, bigoted meandering messages which hint of conspiracies and intrigue are more his style.
Do yourself a favor Mr. Fischer, get over your little tantrum and get on with your life.

Oh, I almost forgot. Idiopathic neuropathy is a condition of the peripheral nervous system which causes numbness, tingling or pain and/or muscle weakness which can affect a persons stability when walking or standing. Idiopathic just refers to a lack of apparent cause for the condition. Someone with your professed connections to the national media should surely have been able to find a more appropriate condition to which to attribute a differing opinion. You sometimes show your ignorance in the most entertaining ways.

Obviously the extent of your research is limited to the first google search entry you came across.
Have you read your DSM IV lately? Here, let me help-
FYI- Idiopathic Neuropathy, particularly when there is a neuropathic pain element attached to it, can have a huge impact on the patient’s overall quality of life and mental well being. Furthermore, a combination of these neuropathic conditions (expecially when idiopathic and therefore difficult to ascertain the clinial cause) may bring about, for example,-
· An apathy towards life in general, and/or, a self imposed social isolation
· An inability to properly perform the normal activities of day to day living
· Disrupted sleep pattern
· Memory retention difficulties
· Mood swings
· Feelings of isolation, frustration and despair
· Suicidal tendency
If you have a DSM IV you can study up and not make a fool out of youself (again)

Never heard of the Ghazi's eh? Then you don't have a dog in this hunt. Are you the self-appointed moral arbitrer that trolls message boards and tries to defend people who have already been convicted. What kind of nut are you?
"I am someone who is interested in the truth"-
So are we. That's why we continue to provide links to AKC public records websites, links to Network TV transcripts regarding the ongoing puppy mill epidemic in Sumner and Macon County, google links, public records and quotes made by law enforcement officers.
The only "truth" that you are interested in is vindication for your puppy mill friends- you will not find vindication for your friends because they are guilty. Brittany Bergez has been fined, sentenced to jail time after pleading guilty to several counts of animal cruelty and has other criminal charges pending. The Ghazi's had their AKC license revoked for 10 years and fined $2,000 for REFUSING to allow the AKC access to their dogs or their records. I wonder what will happen when the Ghazi's refuse to allow the IRS access to their records. And yes- there are other "kennels" under investigation. If owned a dog kennel anywhere in middle Tennessee I would be concerned.
There are several humane associations and law enforcement agencies at the county and state level that have been contacted. More than one federal agency has been apprised of our concern. All four network TV affiliates have been contacted about the puppy mills in Westmoreland, TN. Three newspapers have been contacted. Just google Laura Ghazi or Brittany Bergez and see what you get.
Our Rescue team has fact supported by the actions taken by the AKC against the Ghazis in September of 2007, actions taken against Bergez, numerous public documents, transcripts from witnesses and the media and some very incriminating pictures.
No one on this message thread who has tried to defend the Ghazi's has presented any evidence that would exonerate them. Most of you defenders are inarticulate whiners who offer nothing substantial in their defense except denials.
Sue us for libel if that us what your are implying. Maybe the Ghazis are stupid enough to try to sue us and the media. They know by now that any legal proceeding would involve a countersuit and would require the subpoena of all their breeder records, vet records, depositions from all vets who have records on their dogs, sumbission of some pictures taken over a year ago of the living conditions that their animals have had to endure, testimony and public notices from the AKC, and possibly an IRS investigation, testimony from countless former customers, etc.
Now let's go spend some quality time with the wife and the dog.

Lawmakers Explore Animal Abuse Registry
NASHVILLE, Tenn.- State lawmakers want to add another public registry of convicted criminals to the Internet.
Legislation creating an animal abuse registry is supposed to keep pets, children and neighborhoods safe.
The bill is near completion. The registry would require anyone convicted of felony animal abuse, animal fighting and bestiality to register with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The legislation has already passed in the Senate. A vote in the House is expected to happen Thursday.
Last year, someone in North Nashville doused a dog with gasoline and then set it on fire. Veterinarians and Metro animal control workers treated Angel for several months.
"The ones who did it I feel like there's something wrong with them, because you just don't sit around burning pets or animals or anything," said Angel's owner, Ozell Mitchell.
State lawmakers agree.
Nashville Rep. Janis Sontany said she's seen too many studies linking animal abuse with future crime.
"Studies show that animal abuse is often times a precursor to domestic violence and to child abuse," Sontany said.
So, Sontany and other lawmakers are creating an animal abuse registry.
"People need to know if there's someone in there neighborhood that has been convicted of animal abuse, animal fighting or bestiality," she said.
The registry would be maintained by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. It would look like the registries for sex and meth offenders. It will have photographs, home addresses and the crimes the animal abuser has been convicted of.
The TBI has no idea how many people will be added to the registry each year.
"There's just no way to know. No way to tell," said TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm. "The Board of Probation and Parole has told us three. We've heard numbers as many as six to 10 a year, three a year."
The database will grow and pet owners such as Mitchell will be able to check the registry for known animal abusers living in their neighborhoods.
"They're just like human beings because I loved that dog," she said.
Angel eventually recovered from her injuries but because she requires a lot more care. Ozell reluctantly let the shelter put her up for adoption. She said the dog is in a good home.
Legislation creating the registry is in the House Calendar and Rules Committee Tuesday morning. It is expected to hit the House floor on Thursday.
The animal abuse registry is predicted to cost taxpayers $22,000 to set up.
Lawmakers estimate it will cost about $5,000 a year for the TBI to maintain it.

The great Arab-Muslim-American puppy story.

Ahmed and Oliver
Having a dog in an Arab/Muslim household is an exhausting proposition. Who wants to wash or take a shower every time a dog touches or licks you, as I was brought up to do back home in Egypt? In Islamic tradition, Muslims are prohibited from touching the saliva of dogs. If you do come in contact with a dog, you're supposed to wash your hands seven times before you pray. Most Muslims will avoid dogs at all cost to stay clean for their daily prayers. There are a few closet Muslim dog lovers, but they tend to keep their dogs outdoors.
