We have some things in common - a fellow American Legionnaire -
and a former Catholic just like me.

As a Catholic, generally speaking, we didn't read the Bible for ourselves, we were,as you say "force fed" the beliefs we were to be taught.

The best thing I did was to begin reading about the life of Jesus from the New Testament. Ask yourself what is the secret of this Bible being so popular for the last 1900 years etc. Why have people died as martyrs for trusting in this Jesus of the bible over the years? Why have people spent their lives as missionaries in an unreached tribe seeking to share it's message of God's love?

It's easy to pick a verse and seek a contradiction with a critical eye -- especially if you've had a bad experience with religion (you are definitely not alone).(by the way - 70-80 years old is meant to be an average -- the point is that our lifetime of whatever it is is just a speck in the vast ocean of eternity)

I had to lay down my pride and ego and pick up the Bible and honestly read it. Atheists in the past have done that and believed. Agnostics too.
