You canít blame the chief for this one, Sanchez needed to be apprehended. Typical of society that blames everyone but the one responsible. Tragic accident, my prayers go out to the family. With New Mexicoís lax laws who knows what will happen.

Attitudes like yours are why we have such a problem in the criminal justice system, easy for you to judge this officer when you would not have guts to do his job. That goes for the rest of you crybabies out there too. If you think you can do a better job then step up or otherwise shut up.

This story is confusing at best...The chamelon news story keeps changing color so quick...Where is the supporting documentation for story verification? Who is overseeing content? I would like to see the Accident/Incident report (NMSP)on this one for facts link it? Where is the due process in all this? Was this just a stop member driving truck and ran up to Chief and fled before he engaged? Also,is this not the Mountainair Police Department not the sheriff's Department which I believe the SO for this county is Torrance County. This story sounds does not make much sense - Chase no chase...Felony eluding running...There are mandated pursuit polices spelled out by state criminal and traffic code

Ok if the sheriff shot, then get mad at him not the Chief. Sheriff Gibson looks and acts like Charlie Brown anyways.

Typical of Mountainair. Two of the town councilors are dead set against any kind of law enforcement in the town. They have their heads buried in the sand and deny the rampant heroin and meth problem here. If the police dare stop anyone in their family for a traffic citation there will be hell to pay by the police. If the chief had done anything wrong he would be in jail right along with Paul Sanchez.
It appears to me that the people that are trying to railroad the chief are the same folks that for years have allowed crime to flourish in Mountainair. Well not this time. The old time prejudice of years past won't stand up to the facts. And the facts are Paul Sanchez is solely responsible for this tragedy. Trying to make the chief pay for someone's actions that he had no control over is WRONG.

"Sanchez crashed into the Chavez's car, killing the Mountainair grandmother and grandson."

What part of that do folks not understand?

It's was a sad day when those 2 passed away after this crash...what is even more sad is the citizens attempting to place blame on their police for causing someone to run from them.

How did he cause this? It was completely up to the crook to run and he chose to do so.

I guess in a small little crap town like that everyone sticks up for their criminals.

Typical small town behavior. I saw one report and the owner was more concerned about the condition of his truck and not that it was used to kill two people.

Responsibility Lies upon offender alone - The text of the aggravated fleeing statute reads:
A. Aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer consists of a person willfully and carelessly driving his vehicle in a manner that endangers the life of another person after being given a visual or audible signal to stop, whether by hand, voice, emergency light, flashing light, siren or other signal, by a uniformed law enforcement officer in an appropriately marked law enforcement vehicle in pursuit in accordance with the provisions of the Law Enforcement Safe Pursuit Act [29-20-1 NMSA 1978].
B. Whoever commits aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer is guilty of a fourth degree felony.

Difference circumstances but in same regards brought by the state Gary K. King, Attorney General Patricia A. Gandert, Assistant Attorney General
I recall reading a case out of Portales, That was brought before IN THE SUPREME COURT OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO
Opinion Number: 2008-NMSC-006
Filing Date: January 8, 2008
Docket No. 29,947

I think that the people of that town are just looking for a scapegoat on this issue. What would've happened if another officer had used a spike strip to stop the vehicle and the same thing happened? Would they be trying to take heads for that too?

What about the owner of the truck who gave this known fugitive his keys and allowed him in his home? Isn't that a felony? The chief was cleared and the town council and the mayor need to back him.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. The chief had received a tip that Sanchez had a warrant out on him in Arizona for kidnapping is why he was pulled over. When he fled Kuzleben was in his right firing at him. The accident is 100% Sanchezs fault, not the chief's. The owner of the truck who let his cousin drive it is still whining about his truck having it's tire flattened by the bullet. Small town mentality that does not deserve a police chief who does his job. Granted the accident was tragic but the people need to put the blame squarely where it belongs, on Sanchez & on his cousin for harboring a dangerous felon.

I can't believe that town. An officer does his job and now they want to hang him and what let the fugitive go to boot? The cousin whining about his truck, GET OVER IT YOU ID10T, you should be in the slammer too.

So say he let this guy go,,, he kills someone else,,then that family demands the same thing because the officer let this guy go. Saying this never would have happend if he tryed to catch the perp. Catch 22

This should be no surprise. Mountainair is a lawless town that has resisted any type of law enforcement for many years. The police officer does his job. The criminal runs and kills two people. So instead of blaming the criminal they blame the cop. Typical Mountainair mentality.
