UA started DCA-SFO non-stops months ago. AA started DCA-LAX shortly after that. This article is just more free press for the low-fare "darlings of the media" airlines.

Virgin America didn't 'pop' any permiter rule.

sucks that there's still a perimeter rule in the first place and that in this day and age DCA flight schedules are still controlled by congress :=(
