Hi, I plan on visiting the UK for 2013 spring break. I was wondering if the black culture was any different there and what I should expect? Where do most tourists go?

Good for you, you will love the UK. London is a popular location, it's great for the amazing Architecture, clubs, famous shops like Harrodsburg. Google Uk tourist board, they will give you a lot of info. Scotland, is beautiful, historic but cold. Visit Wales, still plot of old castle ruins, Cornwall and Devon good for surfer's famous for the Cornish pasties that miner's used to eat down the mine shaft's. Best advice really is to plan ahead, the transport system is really good, but expensive. Book ahead and the fares are cheaper. Coach travel is really good. There are large black communities in London, Bristol, Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester. The top 3 cities were the main slave ports so, naturally a large presence can be seen. London can be hectic, but people will give you the time of day.

The person above me has answered the second part of your question so i will have a go a the first. From my expereince. The black culture is more split not that that is a bad thing what i mean is that its split into different sectors there has not been a large community absorbed into mainstream culture for 000's of years. There are blacks which are born in the UK here blacks from Africa and each African country has its unqiue tradition and customs as well as people from the West Indians. If you're in London and you want to see some parts off the tourist track with a large black communties then places to go are Brixton, Balham, Hackney Tottenham Lewisham. however those places would have been cleaned up by now from the riots

I believe they're similarities between Black Britian and Black America but clearly they're also differences. Many of the similarities come from both being black English speaking westerners also we like most Brits around my generation 1980s/1990s literally grew up on American media so the influence from America is already here.

If you want to see the areas with many black people try; Hackney, Brixton, Tottenham, Peckham, Harlesden towns or just the Zone 2 & Zone 3 towns around East & South London, you can go to local clubs/bars there. But think of it this way, even your Street subculture eg Bloods & Crips have been exported here so those certain areas and clubs are lets say a less extreme version of the crazy things which happen in inner city black ghettos of the US.

You should visit this country in late August times if you want to see the ''Notting Hill Carnival'', the second largest in the world after Rio in Brazil. 28th/20th August time period. I believe this is the single even which sees the largest concetration of black people in this country period. Random girls grinding their ''booty'' all up on you fine women everywhere last time I went.

Tourist sites and places to visit would include: Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road, Stratford City, Trafalgar Square, Picadilly Circus, Brick Lane, Camden Town, Covent Garden, Hyde Park etc.

Make sure to bring loads of money as this city is expensive and the transport costs are a joke, hurting pockets,

I'll use Google maps to get around, I don't want to see an American when out there. Thanks for the help.

The American influence sounds kinda bad for me, I can honestly say that I hate black America culture. I plan to go to oxford and a few clubs just to have fun. Thanks big smoke.

hmm I would have to say that most Americans that live in the UK on a 24/7 day a week trip usually live in the richer parts of London. I haven't come across much Black Americans living or even studying in London. More White Americans in West London
