I had a chance to hear the film maker of the documentary film "Soul Food Junkies" this morning on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. His name is Byron Hurt, and he was inspired to make this documentary because of his father's health issues (obesity and pancreatic cancer).

I believe "Soul Food Junkies" comes on this Monday, January 14, 2013 at 9:00 p.m. on the PBS series Independent Lens. It sounds like it will be very informative and interesting to anyone who is
concerned about health issues within the Black community particularly as they relate to diet and food choices, as well as
the lack of availability of quality healthy foods in certain neighborhoods.

I didn't watch it but I believe its more than just soul food most inner city black folks tend to eat out anyways McDonalds taco bell there are fast food restaurants everywhere in inner cities.. Hardly anyone cooks a home cook meal any more and when they do the food is always laced with sodium and sugar.

That is why I hope people will watch this documentary on Monday January 14, 2013 on PBS a 9 p.m. I think that is the day and time it comes on.

It may not have all of the answers, but maybe it will get Black people to thinking more about their health and to start taking better care of themselves as best they can.

Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and cancer rates seem to be very high in the Black community, and learning to eat healthier is a good step towards addressing some of those issues.

I will be watching this documentary because I am interested in health, and I want to support the Black film maker who made the film.

Interesting take on it. I have also changed my diet and have started eating more vegis and fruits drinking more water. I have now cut pork and soda out my life.

High blood pressure and diabetes runs in my family, I also had high blood pressure while I was pregnant so because of that I thought it was best to change my diet.

I'm glad you have taken steps to keep yourself healthy.
What we put into our body is very important. Of course moderate
exercise, stress management, and a positive out look on life is
important too.

Being healthy is a lifestyle that can be fun and rewarding in so many ways. Learning how to make healthier meals is enjoyable too.

I wish good health to you and your family for always.

Thanks for sharing the information. I will make sure I watch the documentary. We were raised that SOUL food is filled with love however the new generation is learning its not healthy for the mind, body and soul. We can't eat what our parents and grandparents use to eat.

soul food - what a silly name! this is an assumption , like "soul music" , that only blacks have a soul. What silly rubbish. It is just fattening Southern food, eaten by whites as well. Blacks shouldn't give themselves airs.

Whatever you eat, just make sure it's 100% organic, 100% all-natural in origin.

NON-organic foods and drinks are laced with poisonous pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, among other man-manipulated garbage they do to it, simply to make THEM more money, while it makes YOU more prone to disease, cancers of all types and other sicknesses.

It's my opinion that the [owners of many] major food manufacturers work secretly together with the higher-ups in the pharmaceutical industry. The more sick you get from eating/drinking the poison they put inside the food and water/juices, the more money the pharmaceutical industry makes when you go to a doctor and they prescribe you such pharmaceutical drugs.

I'm sure they've paid off many corrupt politicians to also not outlaw most of this poison junk... yet they outlaw a green, harmless, organic plant called "marijuana", so they can bust down doors, trash your place and throw you in jail for simply eating or smoking such a harmless plant.

How backward and criminal can this government be? Very! That's obvious.

Eat/drink ORGANIC!
