What's wrong with being black nowadays? Everytime you aske someone, usually someone younger what their race is, they half to be half puerto rican or indian or dominican or something you know they are not. I'm not tryna call everyone liars but what drives a person to lie about their race. The worse is when a person say's "Oh I'm not black my skin is just dark" and you know their lying because they have the same course hair and dark skin you do and they can't even really identify with the race they claim to be. Are we that ashames of ourselves?

'Race' and ethnicity are two different things. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the term 'race' was created by the U.S. goverment to make it easier to measure the U.S. population in the Census Report.

'Race' is more based on superficial characteristics of people while Ethnicity is based on country of origin, religion, and other social constructs.

I think the problem surfaces when people use 'race' and ethnicity interchangably. Usually people don't lie about their parents' country of origin.

It's wierd. Would you call a person who is truely from India black because their dark skin color? Is a dark Filipino considered black?

race refers to any group of people having the same ancestry; family; clan; lineage so yes i do use race and ancestry interchangable because their kinda the same thing in my book lol. ANd i wouldn't call a person from India or a black fillipino black. I mean less be real we can all 90 % of the time tell when a person is really black and not mixed.

Apparently that's the in thing in America. Some black kid had asked me if I was mixed also, because according to him he was, I said no.
I guess he was shocked because I apparently appear more mixed than he was (he certainly didn't look it imo)

it's simple many black people have an inferiority complex due to living in a white dominated society where blacks are the bottom of the barrel and looked down upon by whites and other races who have also being brainwashed like blacks to have a white is right mentality. they feel the less black they are they're they're more closer to being equal to other non black races. it's really nothing but self hatred

Ancestory can fall under both race and ethnicity as an identification factor. Actually, I'm not clear myself what is the difference between race and ethnicity. But I gotta ask a couple more questions though. I'm interested in what type of person that you would 'black'. So would you call an Haitian person black if their first language was French? What about mixed people, where does a child become a 'black' person or another 'race'?

Thinking about it more I think 'race' as an addition ancestory, has some cultural meaning, too.

Back to your orginal post, I don't agree with anyone who lies about their ethnicity or 'race', but I don't think their lying when they break down their 'blackness' into where their parents are from, and/or where they were raised, or what have you. It's really more out of pride of their families, than 'hating' on their 'blackness'.

I'm mixed!!:) Maybe they see being just Black as being boring? They just wanna add some salsa into their lives, lol.

BTW, I'm curious as to why you would be asking people what their race was if you already know that they are Black??

oh thats nothing new, when I was in the 5th grade everyone had to write a paragraph on their family origins and most of the class said they were either half cherokee, half indian or puerto rican and damn near everybody was black. All the Puerto ricans were proud to say they were puerto rican but all the blacks was suposedly mix and really didn't want to say they were black. This has been going on for a long time.

Who do you know that's Dominican or Brazilian that says I'm "Black or White-Brazilian" or "Black or White-Dominican" when you ask them about their nationality?? You can't compare those two to "Americans" especially not Brazilians, because it doesn't even work like that bro.

Black Americans whos ancestor were slaves here do have alot of native american blood runnin through us and some caucasain as well, but none the less we are still just black plain and simple. Puerto rican is not an ethnicity, irs nationaltiy. Many puerto rican are white, and many other are different tribes of indian
