I work as a CFI for a flight school that is in a city of well over 60% African Americans. It would lead one to believe that there would be about half of our enrollees in our programs would be black. Not the case, in the three years I have instructed, not a single black student has enrolled.

We have about 80 students each year and not a single black person has expressed an interest in becoming a pilot, which has struck me as odd since most of our students are local. Is there just not an interest in aviation or what in the black community?

"The struggle to expand African-American Pilot presence in the faces of unfair hiring/retention practices continues to be an uphill effort, and promises to become increasingly difficult as the generation of black pilots (hired in the 60's) has already begun to reach mandatory retirement age. Additionally, the military, which serves as a traditional source of airline pilots, especially black pilots , is rapidly being downsized."

Quality not quantity!!!! Tuskeegee and the other Bros flying. The question is if we do the math per capita How many black Pilots have been shot down In the air forces of America Canada and England. Compared to white pilots I know this is a civilian thread so to speak but I think it is a good question.

My curiosity comes from My family fighting In the Eighth Air force in WW2 and Korea I continue the Tradition of Air man in Israel i'm not a pilot but my great uncles were.

Hey, stupid....he said they don't enroll in the programs that would qualify them to apply for the jobs they get subjected to those unfair hiring practices.

OMG, your stupidity knows no bounds. He asked a question and I provided a link. If it's known that there is job discrimination, then people won't ENROLL in an industry that won't hire them after they graduate. If a father is a pilot then he would discourage his son/daughter from pursuing a career that has given him so much heartache. What kid would join an industry that their parents weren't happy in? Unlike you, others actually do some research before jumping into shyt.

Dyna, you have no idea what you are talking about. And no, I do not attend a flight school because I have already done so. Did I say that there are NOT black student pilots? NO, you dumbass. I asked why there was not such an interest in the African American community in aviation.

APV, thank you for the report. It really doesn't justify their lack of enrollment these days, since the majority of students use their college student loans as a gateway to learn how to fly. The flight program that I am an instructor for is part of a state college in Alabama.

It's not cheap by any means, but nearly all of the students I have use student loans for the pilot training.

As for money in aviation, no there isn't much at all; unless your in the design and engineering field. But, landing a job for an airlines is every professional pilots dream. I am just building PIC time until I have enough hours to apply.

Good topic. As a black man who's interested in aviation, mostly military, that question perplexes me. I guess it's due to the belief that it's a "white" profession to get into, and that some blacks feel that they don't have the intellect, intuition, and academic prowess required to become an airline pilot.

Well I sure enough know a Black pilot. But if you are going to ask asinine questions I can ask how come there are hardly any White doctors? Most ive seen were either non-white foreigners and the ones who were White were Jewish. And how come there are so many White males in the military how come they are not able to go to college first.Tell me that and figure that shit out.

??????????

Maybe they don't want to be harassed and pulled over for F.W.B.(flying while Black)?

or.....

It's hard to do drive-bys at 35000 feet?

could be......

It's far more expensive to "pimp out" a 737 than an '87 Eldorado?

IDK. Beats the hell outta me.
