I am involved with a Jamaican born man. This is my first experience with a West Indian. Strange. Has obsession with bleach. Can anyone explain? The relationship will not last much longer as we are very different intellectually and socially.

Are you talking about bleaching cream, or the actual bleach, as in bleach you use on your clothing.

Not all Jamaicans pracatice this. However, many Jamaicans do use bleach for washing, cleaning, etc. Basically you will find most Jamaican family with a bottle of bleach in their homes. Jamaican consider using bleach as a way of killing germs, and bacteria of any kind, if somthing seems dirty to a Jamaicn the first think they will consider using is bleach, were applicable. Bleach is often use as a disinfectant by many Jamaicans. This is my first time however, hearing of a Jamaican who uses bleach in his bath water. I think this practice may come from the beliefe that bleach cleans every kind of germs. I think he just wants to make sure he is clean, it could also be a form of obsession with being clean. He could also be doing this because he does not trust the environment's that he is in on a daily basis. You should suggest dettol to him becuaes bleach can be very harmful to his skin over time, dettol is more gentle on the body. Many Jamaicans use dettol in bath water instead of bleach. He can buy dettol in most west Indian stores. Have you ever ask him why he uses bleach in his bath water.???

Thanks for your response. Well, first I told him that it makes me feel that it has something to do with me. He told me it has nothing to do with me. It's just a way of keeping clean. I called my pharmacist and she told me to have him read the label on the bottle. She suggested that it was probably a compulsion with his and that he may not be able to stop. I told him that it is not good for the skin and could certainly have an adverse effect on my body if he uses it. He said he would no longer use it but I can't be sure he has stopped when he is at home. I make sure he does not have access to bleach when he is in my home.

Yeah i thought it was mostly DETTOL that jamaicans used anyways. Most of my jamaican family members used dettol.
I would reccomend it though, because even that isnt good for your skin, its like putting acid on your skin.
Loads of west indian women used to wash their underneath with dettol and that is plain madness, its not a good idea. My mum used to do that and the doctor told her to stop because it can cause thrush.
