Hey guys. So I've noticed that in the Black Community, it is more acceptable to be bigger. And it's good that we embrace our curves and embrace our bodies. It's beautiful.
BUT.
Diseases associated with obesity have reach epidemic levels among our people. This is not okay, and I feel it's something that we can change. So let's talk about it. How can we get our community healthy, while still maintaining our positive body image?
Staying away from animal products would do wonders. We really shouldn't consume animal products at the rate we're consuming them. Meat for the most part usually take longer to breakdown because our stomach acids are NOT as strong as Carnivore animals thus left rottin' inside us & creating diseases & possibly oder. We also need to cut back on sugar & breads. Consuming too much sugar & bread makes it difficult to maintain flat stomach even if you are naturally smaller. Just because ur thin doesn't mean you are NOT overweight. Having a large belly is a sign of obesity as well. Itchy skin & scalp are also possible signs of poor Health.

I agree wholeheartedly, however AFAM women have SERIOUS issues with obesity. Our problem is that it is accepted and glorified. When I go around my family down south, I'm thin to them. I consider myself healthy and fit, but not really thin.
This being the AFAM forum, I figured I'd get a conversation started. There are so many threads talking a whole lotta bull, and not enough discussing the issues that are far more important in our communities.
I agree to a certain. extent. Yea black families down south tend to be like that with the soul food thing. But you also have white folks like Paula dean as well. I've just noticed, well atleast where I live, More black womem in this day and age are taking care of themselves better then they use to. And I think america as whole needs a change. when it comes to healthy living choices. I cant count on both my hands how many obese white and hispanic people ive seen. America is known for this. Is it black people who own all these fast food places? No! Back in my gandmothers day it was norhing like this. Everything was natural and they growed it themseleves on THEIR farm. Also Once people wake up and realize it's a lifestyle. and not just a weight thing and sincerely care about their health things will change

It's not about pressure to be beautiful or to be thin. It's about being healthy. You can be a healthy bigger person. I'm not thin at all! When trying to figure out where you should be, you take into account your body type, frame, activity level, and diet. I'm a size 8/10 with 22% Body Fat, which is considered the lower end of normal for a woman my age. According to BMI I'm overweight, but according to doctors I'm in great shape and perfectly healthy.
It's all about judging yourself based on YOU as an individual, and really based on your own race. Black people have denser bones and generally larger frames. While this explains why we tend to weight more, it's not an excuse to be fat.
You can be a healthy thin person too, but that shouldn't mean one has to vomit up their meals daily to do so. From what I understand this is quite common among white females.

I appreciate your comment on health, but there has always been that pressure for women to be feminine and beautiful. This also explains black women's obsession with hair which generally has nothing to do with overall health.

The focus must be on HEALTH!

For example, the Western model for beauty is, like it or not, a thin WHITE woman. While this image is changing, ONE practically irrefutable truth remains. A Black woman cannot transform herself into a WHITE woman.

When we focus on race, the preeminence of the slim, WHITE model comes into play and we've all seen the effects.

.
OP focused this thread on health and IMO that is exactly where the focus should be. Undeniably, certain diseases affect African American women at a greater rate than white women. What are they? What are they? Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease are some of the best known examples. That's exactly why Black folks should be made aware and provided means of combatting those problems.
.
Let's focus on health. please!

Thank you so much for realizing the emphasis I put on health. Honestly, in my teen years, self esteem and body image was a problem for me. In fact, I suffered from anorexia/bulimia. It took losing people I cared about for me to decide that my own life was important. The first step was getting healthy. Everything else went from there.

I think that as a community, we don't care enough about physical health. And we should! I think we should try to have healthy bodies, so that we may also have healthy minds.

No. Thank you. I wish my posts were more positive. Someone above mentioned that similar health problems affect all Americans--indeed many who live in the Western world.
.
I'm reminded of Dick Gregory.(comedian) His main theme, with respect to health went something like this: In the Southern hemisphere, folks are dying from hunger and malnutrition, but in the north, folks are dying from excess.
