Hey guys. So I've noticed that in the Black Community, it is more acceptable to be bigger. And it's good that we embrace our curves and embrace our bodies. It's beautiful.

BUT.

Diseases associated with obesity have reach epidemic levels among our people. This is not okay, and I feel it's something that we can change. So let's talk about it. How can we get our community healthy, while still maintaining our positive body image?

Odinist is right, too many people are eating fatty foods and exercising less.

I have noticed black women like to dance a lot, maybe that interest and energy can be channeled towards Zumba... It is a great way to get in shape and is so much fun. The good thing again about Zumba bis you can have it in large numbers thus involve a lot of people at once.

I think traditional diet has a lot to do with it. My family is mostly concentrated in the south (Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi) and whenever I go to visit family they're surprised that I don't really eat the food. Growing up in NYC, I think that health and fitness is more important to me than it would've been had I grown up in that culture.

I completely agree that Zumba would be a fantastic way to incorporate exercise into our lives. If you don't like running, there are other things to do. Personally, I enjoy kickboxing and rowing! There is something out there for everyone. It's not what you do that matters, it's the fact that you're doing SOMETHING.

I think that a lot of the problem is education. I think that parents should be educated on proper nutrition when it comes to feeding children. Rather than buying kids Fruit Loops, maybe try Shredded Wheat. It's the little things that make the biggest differences.

Ahh ... the age old pressure to be beautiful.

With white women they feel pressured to be thin.
With black women they feel pressured to have straight hair.

As a man who is no longer thin with kinky hair, I'd make a terrible woman.

It's not about pressure to be beautiful or to be thin. It's about being healthy. You can be a healthy bigger person. I'm not thin at all! When trying to figure out where you should be, you take into account your body type, frame, activity level, and diet. I'm a size 8/10 with 22% Body Fat, which is considered the lower end of normal for a woman my age. According to BMI I'm overweight, but according to doctors I'm in great shape and perfectly healthy.

It's all about judging yourself based on YOU as an individual, and really based on your own race. Black people have denser bones and generally larger frames. While this explains why we tend to weight more, it's not an excuse to be fat.

Actually, if you ate raw garlic with water with every meal, high blood pressure will leave your body along with excess weigh.also do ten squats afere each meal.

I don't have high blood pressure OR excess weight. 22% BF is fit and lean for a woman. I'm actually training to possibly compete.

YES! Organic meat makes a huge difference. I'm a huge fan of grass fed bison. I'm almost 100% paleo. I still eat brown rice and yogurt. Can't quite let my favourite foods go. But diet can change your whole composition!

Yeah most people don't know the difference. Especially when you throw thick in there. I don't believe in thick. Everyone I've met who says they're thick are just a "socially acceptable" level of fat. Rule of thumb: If someone slaps your butt and your stomach jiggles, you have work to do.

In the media the black chick is always the fattest and darkest, white chicks are always thin and mostly blonde. The black guy is always the coolest and smartest but he never is used to sell something it's always the blonde.

What we regard as "fat" in some cases is not always unhealthy, just like those who APPEAR to be fit aren't always in the best physical condition either.

I think health ranges from person to person...

About Black women (and many white women[and men] as well) I agree. A person-- any person-- can reach a point such that weight moves from having a homeostatic profile to an unhealthy one. In those cases, healthy diet and activity are not a question of fashion, it is often a question of life and death. And, among those cases, I believe that too many, far too many, Black women have gone over the line.

The healthy thing about this discussion (and it is among the best I've encountered during my years of posting on TOPIX) is that folks are beginning to acknowledge the problem for what it is, and what is spectacular about this discussion is the way folks are pointing to countermeasures.

All raw for me! no sodas. Lost of omega 3's, multi vitamins garlic Ect. And no pork. I work out 24/7 and coordinate a work out class! I dont know what type of black women most have been around. But my classes are majority black women, Latina and Asian. And I know quit a few black women who doesn't eat junk like mc donalds. I myself haven't put that crap in my body since i was a child and didn't know any better. I don't eat fast food AT ALL. I think america as a whole eats to much junk. White, black, Hispanic whatever! And doesn't get enough excersise. Not just black women. Why do you think america has the heightest obesity rate in the world with all this processed hormone shot up disgusting food and with fast food spots on ever corner. America needs to make a change. Not just black women.

I agree wholeheartedly, however AFAM women have SERIOUS issues with obesity. Our problem is that it is accepted and glorified. When I go around my family down south, I'm thin to them. I consider myself healthy and fit, but not really thin.

This being the AFAM forum, I figured I'd get a conversation started. There are so many threads talking a whole lotta bull, and not enough discussing the issues that are far more important in our communities.
