STUDY SAYS RAP MUSIC GLAMORIZES DRUGS: Research sampled 341 hip hop lyrics between 1979 and 1997.

*A new study suggests that hip hop music has increasingly glamorized the use of illegal drugs, portraying marijuana, crack and cocaine as symbols of wealth and status, according to a new study by the journal Addiction Research & Theory.

Thanks for the article. I was wondering when a study like this would come out. Those from my generation know that Hip Hop (Rap) has lost it's soul or maybe even sold it for a few nickel and dimes. The REAL HIP HOP (Rap, Spoken Word, Neo-Soul) is NOT played on radio, which for the most part is controlled by the enemy.

Yep it does, but did there really need to be a study on this? Who do you think is REALLY profiting off drugs being glamorized? You have your low level hustlers, but who is smuggling drugs into this country & who controls the media? Something to think about.

I would be inclined to jump on this bandwagon but knowing a little about african american music history prevents me from doing so. African Americans more than any other ethnic group have contributed more to american music culture than even whites themselves. With the innovation of these styles of music has come a constant barrage of scrutiny and criticism. Thomas Dorsey, the father of gospel music was criticized when he invented the gospel style of music. Blues and Jazz were both labeled as "black or negro music" or worse. Rock-n-Roll was labeled as devil music and racists criticized it saying it was corrupting their children. Hip-Hop is no different.

Ironically, what many people don't understand is while africa was not technologically advanced in science it was very advanced in the arts. Music, art, craftsmanship, folklore, and poetry were all highly developed in Africa. This is why so many genres have been influenced by african music. Rock and Roll, jazz, blues, reggae, hip-hop, r&b, soul, neo-soul and their respective cultures are all music that is heard, performed, imitated and experienced around the world.

Lastly, why don't we ever hear more about say, heavy metal music? Heavy metal and modern rock music is infused with a multitude of overt dark themes such as suicide, drugs, murder, violence, mayhem and occult worship. The Woodstock 99' concert is prime example, in which it was reported rapes, looting and arson took place. Alt-Rock, Rock and Heavy Metal performers die regularly from overdoses and suicides yet the criticism of this music occurs far less frequently than the magnifying glass standards that hip-hop is placed under. In the end I think it has far less to do with lyrics and more with who's writing them.

Why am I not surprised. I have seen videos on the music channels showing rappers wearing drug symbols on their clothing and rapping about smoking weed in their songs. Young people with no guidance idolize these rappers and emulate them.

Rap music sells within our commuinty. Beacuse all the little boys want to be hard, cool and thugish. While rap music and all of it's negativity is killing us everday. Women are giving birth to sons who one day they can end up in jail or dead in a trash somewhere.

Did it really take a study, by some Harvard geeks, to come to this conclusion?

How insulting. These Harvard geeks must really think we're all dumb.

Which underworld? Hell, the sewer, or the lint colony under your bed?
