There are threads here about skin-bleaching and making your skin lighter--so I wanted to talk about the opposite. I have some cousins who are "high" yellow and they go to the tanning salon during the year so they can be darker.
I actually like the way my skin looks when I'm in the sun, but I know that it's NOT good for you, so I was wondering if any of you guys know of any tanning lotions or anything that black women can use?
This may be a silly question, but I wanted to try it out, because I remember reading that Jada Pinkett and other black celebs tan as well.
So how many of you guys try to get darker instead of lighter and do you have any suggestions for a tanning lotion. BTW I'm a really light Carmel shade(if that makes a difference).

I like how I look when the sun makes me darker too.I'm a light brown and when I've been in the sun for awhile it gives my skin a glow.I have never tried any types of tanning lotions but my mom did and they broke her skin out.So now she just goes to the park spreads her a blanket out in the sun and tans the old-fashioned way.Just make sure you use sunscreen if you do this.

I'm 17 and I am a caramel shade and i also am interested in the idea of tanning but what you can do instead of tan is buy either Dove or Jerrgings Natural Glow Lotion, for med. to dark skin tones. They are usually in a Goldish Bottle and they do work! I didnt think they would work but they do and you will see a difference in your skin in about a week, the only bad thing is your hands on the inside turn a little orangy but that just lets you know its started to work.

when i was younger i used to tan with olive oil. it gave me an all over like bronze-ish colour that i really like.

now, i don't tan with any oils or anything.. i am just at the beach a lot so i just tan naturally.

putting oils on your skin to tan just makes you look old and leathery too soon and we don't really need to put anything on our skin.

but if you want to get that deep tan you need some oils or a lot of time in the sun.

I'm about the color of a penny, I use tanning lotions sometimes, because my skin needs a "jump"...it's true, black women get dull too. Also, it's helps to even out skin tone. I use L'oreal Sublime Glow Daily Moisturizer for Meduim Skin tones. It's gradual, and it does deepen the skin tone, but not to wear it looks fake, just more even and a bit toastier (is that word?), lol

The only down side is, it take about 3 uses for it to start working, AND, it smells bad, like cooking hamburger meat. Everyone I've asked says they don't smell anything, but I do, but I also have overly sensitive olfactories.

In response to the above comment. I too am about the color of a penny, maybe slighter darker. And, I too, use the exact same product as yourself. I love the natural color of my skin, and get hundres of compliments on my natural complexion. However,in the summer, there is a certain glow to my natural complexion I am trying to obtain, somewhat of a glow, without all of the glittery, glowiness if you will. I am wondering if I should use a type of oil of some sort. Not sure as to how to obtain what I am going for.

Same thing here with the penny analogy maybe slightly darker. I like the sun because it evens out the my skintone. I saw the Glow Daily Moisturizer and was thinking about buying it but didn't know if was any good and didn't know who to ask. I find a little lotion mixed in with a touch of body oil does a good job. Now I've taken to doing that mixture and adding a little body shimmer (not one that's too shimmery, Jergen's use to make a good one) to help the glow along.

this was a dumb-ass question. People of color tan naturally, becouse of the high levels of melanin in our skin, then what some one with fair skin would have. the more melanin, the more likely you will tan into a darker or maybe slightly darker colour, then what you are, we dont need tanning lotion, and oil to tan. my mother is naturally a lighter tone then me, light skinned, caramel skinned, "yella boned" "high yella" what ever you would like to call it. when she stays out in the sun constantly in the summer, whne get darker in the areas that are showing, but she will only get a little, browner. Im two shades darker, I have a gorgeous naturally what you may call medium-brown, with a yellowish red undertone, when I go out in the sun im about a nice golden and bronze colour, and I love it. I don't use any kind of tanning lotion, or oil before I leave, into the suns rays. but i do take very well care of my skin.
Ps. I do apologize for calling it a "dumb-ass quetion".
Oh, and also...
usually when you go out in the sun and get that colour what ever it might be darker, it will revert back, because just like tans it fades. but if you take care of your skin well, and buy somethings that, will do well for you (test things out), then im sure it will be great. and cameras(pictures) do actually cause you to appear a shade or two darker, because of lighting it causes the camera to copy what takes best.

Okay apology accepted. It wasn't a dumb ass question just reinforcing that. Simply because i already know people can tan. Its scientifically and physical-eye-witnessing provened. Except for albinos. They can't tan due to complete lack of melanin. But, i wanted to see if a mariah carey , chris brown or bob marley can tan to a chocolate?

Yeah, i sorta believe that the camera can be a little bias when taking the EXACT shade of your complexion because of how it functions so those pictures of mine weren't as reliable.

Anyways, am not obsessing over this.

I'm lightskin too and once I went on holiday to Ghana for 3 wks but I used a factor 40 sun lotion and my colour didn't really change. My sister was originally lightskin too lol but she goes on holiday and sits in the sun all day so she can tan to be dark brown. She goes on holiday a lot to places like Greece and Spain and now her colour has permanently changed to a mid brown colour. When she came back from the Maldives she was dark Chocolate!!!!
