This is taken from Abagond's blog. I read this and it summed up exactly how I feel when I talk to white people and they use the argument that black people always complain and whine about racism.

Btw before you start posting stupid comments, how about you actually READ the post first and discuss it.
----------

Some white people tell me I see racism in everything. I used to think it was just a way to dismiss what I was saying. But even whites who are otherwise serious about the subject of racism say it, so it is not merely just a way to get me to shut up.

First of all, I do not see racism in everything. While I do think that racism in America, both white racism and internalized racism, is far from dead, I doubt it accounts for everything. For example, I think fatherlessness and having children out of wedlock have little to do with racism – both were far lower among blacks in the 1950s when racism was worse. And both have knock-on effects on the rates of crime and poverty on top of the effects of racism.

But I do not talk much here about supposed black pathologies because they get more than enough attention elsewhere. And because I know full well whites use them to get themselves off the hook: See, blacks create their own mess – it has nothing to do with us!

Yet compared to most white people I do seem to see racism in everything. Because they see racism in almost nothing. Because they have narrowed the meaning of the word to just a kind of personal hatred. Because it does not affect them in a bad way. Because they do not want to face up to the racism their lives have been built on.

In reading about this on other blogs, it seems that what persuades them that they are right and I am wrong is that most people agree with them, not me. But “most people”, in this case, are white people!

Why in the world would white people be a better judge of racism in American society than black people? That would be like saying men are a better judge of sexism or straight people are a better judge of homophobia. It would be like asking monks about sex or the rich about poverty.

Does that mean that blacks are right about everything they say about racism? Hardly. But it does mean they have a far better understanding of racism than most whites do. They have to – they are affected by it way more.

I am certainly not right about everything I say. I accept that maybe I see racism in too many things – or too few things (some say I am too soft on whites). I have gone back and forth on this issue myself.

But if you do not believe me the worst thing you could do would be to turn to white people or television. What on earth do they they know? But there are tons and tons of books and blogs written by living, breathing black people and other people of colour. Read those, the more the better, putting yourself into their shoes, and see for yourself how much of this stuff I am making up.

Great thread. I also saw your comment in that stupid "Using small words when talking to blacks" thread. Good stuff, all accurate and on point.

My take on racism, being in America,(the South, at that, man I'm only 30, and I still have stories) is that, only those victimized by racism, are the the one who knows it still exisists.

The race of ppl the actually benefit from racism have to pretend that we're making it all up, so that can continue living off the privilegde they have created from racism.

For that race of ppl to admit that racism exisists, is to then, in some ways, admit that we are right about the things we've been saying all along, and this particular will lose all their "credibility."

This particular race has an "image" all around the world to "uphold" and based on their behavioral history, they're not about to give that up. And with the way the economy is here in the States, IMAGE, is all some members of this race has.

Thank you for your reply to my topic :) Its good to see people making reasoned replies as opposed to the inflammatory BS most of the trolls come up with.

I used to feel as if I WAS imagining racism in everything and that I was being oversensitive, mainly because I'm surrounded by whites who try and tell me this is so. But then the paragraph which he compares it to a straight man telling a gay man what homophobia is or a man telling a woman what sexism is. No one would dare do that, as they are not in that persons shoes. But on here, we have lots of white people who can never imagine what it is like- but yet they feel eminently qualified in telling me what my experience as a black person is like.

I didn't read the whole post but i get the gist of what he's saying and its really true.

I get sick of being labelled as being oversensitive when I point out the things whites are oblivious to.

Blacks seem to see racism whenever they are not sucessful at things.

So you say see racism but that just might be the way your used to interpreting certain situations events, because you're so conscious of your race.

Sure there is racism. But do you ever think it is justified? Honestly, looking at the history of certian people, how they are prone to crime and disorder etc, how they are inconsiderate and disruptive, how they bring down values. Do you ever put yourself in White peoples shoes?

That is not true. Its funny that as a white person you are emminently qualified to tell me when I see things as being racist that it is because I am not successful. Would you go up to a gay man and tell them what its like to experience homophobia? I am successful and a professional high in my field of work. Regardless, I STILL experience racism. That whenever I walk into a shop people look at me and I get followed around even though I've never stolen anything and I'm dressed in designer labels- I still get treated like a thief? Do YOU notice that happening to you?

Well as an intelligent and emotionally mature human being, I feel that I am well and able to distinguish between reasoned actions and those that are reactionary and based on primitive ideas that are borne out of fear and scaremongering.
I AM conscious of race- because I HAVE to be. The whole way the world works is the subconscious message that white=good and black=bad. Maybe MORE people should think about race and the way they act towards people of other races, it'll definitely lower the amount of people that say stupid things.

For the record, racism coexists with discrimination and NO discrimination is EVER justified. Thats like saying that homophobia is justified against gay people.

And I'd like to know where you pulled these statistics about black people and crime from? And no, out of your ass doesn't count
Excuse me, whilst I play the violin for poor you. Let me put myself in white people's shoes and see what hardships they have to endure.

And surprise, crime does happen in predominantly white communities too!

I see you live in the UK so maybe you stick out there like a sore thumb. I dunno. But in the US unfortunately Blacks are seen in general as f#ck ups, it is no accident. They created this image and continue to perpetuate it. Many are followed around in stores because they are more prone to steal than everyone else. And many dress like thugs because they enjoy the drama. If you want people to respect you and trust you then you have to earn it. Hey you may be an upright law abiding citizen etc but if many of your fellow race act like fools, then that will tend to cast a negative light on you too. Sorry.

This sentence officially discredits everything else you might say on the subject. Justified racism? Really??? Only a true racist could even come up with such an outlandish statement.

Wrong. There's more whites than blacks who steal, naturally.
But there's also more whites who don't steal,
... than blacks who do.
And there's more blacks who do steal,
... than blacks who don't.
So, blacks are more likely to be theives than whites are.

Now cry about it, because a million and three links will never prove otherwise.

I have no "feelings" toward your post other than to point out the stupidity in it. If you had even close to an education, you'd understand just how idiotic the term "justified racism" actually is.

Enjoy being the smartest monkey in your tree.....allegedly.

You rush to call it idiotic because it is not to your liking. That however, does not have any bearing on whether or not it's true, as anyone with even the slightest modicum of intellect can see. Any education that would convince someone that racism couldn't be justified is mere bleeding liberal propaganda. That subject has many angles to it, which can not be so casually dismiised with such a shallow and perfunctory rebuttal as yours. Anyway it's been nice chatting with you. At least I know you try hard, but you may run along now...there's a good lad.
