Why do Nigerians think they are better than other Africans and AAs?

I'm not saying ALL Nigerians because I don't know every Nigerian. But that is what I have seem to run across during my encounters with Nigerians in college, at business and in general life. Plus this is also depicted in Black media, for example, in the Wesley Snipes film "Sugar Hill" when the Nigerian men refused to work with the two AA men because they are "akata" (cotton pickers, African-American). Plus other Africans have told me that Nigerians think that they are better than other blacks and Africans. Even other Nigerians have complained about their own people having this complex.

What could be the possible history behind this?

Hmm, I've never encountered this stuck up attitude of superiority from the Nigerians I've met. I guess it's probably because of their confidence in their country's rising economy that makes them feel better than other Africans, whose economies may not be nowhere near theirs. As for their superiority over AA's, I believe it's because they have better values and morals that they feel like they are better than us.

How about this, you have some people who always think they are better than the next man for whatever reason. This isn't a phenomenon isolated to Nigerians.

Thanks babe!:) I'm suprised to learn it's raining. Must be an isolated shower because you're only two hours aways from me. It's bright and sunny here.

Um, I know this isn't a phenomenon unique to Nigerians, however every group has their unique issues as to why they feel the are better than another group:
British > Irish
Romans > Jews (in Biblical times)
Mandarin Chinese > Cantonese Chinese
Light Skin Blacks > Dark Skin Blacks
Republicans > Democrats
Skinny People > Fat people
The list goes on. But each opposing groups has their unique reasons as to why one group thinks they are better than the other.

Nigerians prey on Liberians by running guns and dope do that poor country.....

Nigerians run the most scams, as well as sold their OWN into slavery 400-300 years ago....

Although I can't personally say this is common with Nigerians, I know the attitude you speak of and it IS common with black people from all different backgrounds, in my personal opinion, and most of it, like most ignorance has to do with preconceived notions of others in comparison to self.

Thinking one group of people is one way and another group of people is another way, by mere default of a person being in that group, you automatically conclude a person is a certain way, which in your mind is not on the same level/not as good as you or even less than you---this is how many ppl superficially uplift themselves.

Perfect example, with a twist: a couple of years back, a friend of mine who happens to be Cameroonian, my cousin and I were on a trip somewhere in TX, we were lost and looking for directions. We saw one black guy and decided to stop him, ask for directions, which my friend was completely against bc she said he could be dangerous, we are women alone, etc.....

Well, we stopped anyway; then as soon as he opened his mouth to speak only two words, she changed her tune bc he was African; now, she says, he is a good person bc he is African lol..it's OK that we talk to him etc. See what I mean?

I haven't had too many positive experiences with Nigerians. I use to date a Nigerian girl who couldn't tell the truth to save her life, and I met other Nigerians who had that pathological lying thing going on. But there were other Nigerians who were completely cool.
About the arrogance thing, keep in mind that many Nigerians who come here, and espectially the ones in College, are the creme of their society and have been living a privileged life since birth.

Well, I have seen this attitude working with many Nigerians in the school system (I teach)... On the other hand, my fiance is Nigerian, and I have seen the kinder side of Nigerians... Now as an AAW, I must admit that I wasn't treated kindly until I became involved with my Nigerian fiance..... SMH that they were such JERKS until I got with one of them!
