A high yeller is in deed capable of dishing out punishments. The regular negroes will hate him for his superiority and the high yeller will very quickly learn to despise them in turn. You'll have to teach the him by way of example at first, but I've never had any trouble in that way. Your field negroes should soon respect his authority.<quoted text>
I will confess that I did not realize what hard work slave owning really is. I have even more appreciation for my ancestors, how hard they must have worked!!
A High Yeller you say? That does seem a solution, do they need food and water too? Is a High Yeller capable of handing out all punishments? My last hobbling did have me in a sweat and I was almost going to abandon the idea...
A slave sitting at all in his betters presence is bad enough but at the table? Without his betters presence it is a heinous crime, I can only offer my support and outrage at the bounder...sitting down indeed!!
I also have made an error i that I clothed Rastis in a little sailor outfit as my Lady wife found that he seemed to look like one of those monkeys that accompany a street organ. Her intent was to have him dance, dressed as a sailor, around the organ, to raise funds for people less well off than ourselves, like Canadians. I shall ensure that he does so naked in future.
A shed? Is that not spoiling your slaves? Forgive me I am new at slave ownership and was not aware that slaves needed shelter, I thought like all wild animals they were at home in the open. It does answer why I have not seen them building nests. I was chatting the Lady of the house just the other day that I had not seen any negro nests. I speculated as to whether they built them in trees or dug burrows!! Silly me.
I really should take my slave owning responsibilities more seriously. Do you know of a website or book for new slave owners such as myself?
My Lady will laugh so, when I tell her that negroes have no nests in trees nor burrows...
If I do decide to waste more money on a shed, do you have any suggestions as to its construction? Details of the amount of space each slave needs and what is best for bedding....straw or sawdust.
I am so glad there is this thread, it has been so useful.
The only problems to be wary of are(as I've mentioned) don't let the HY get too uppity, and be careful he doesn't thrash the negroes too beyond due measure.
I strongly recommend getting a high yeller, especially if you have more than 10 field negroes. In some parts they can be hard to come by, but I'd suggest seeking out the Irish quarter, where it is not unknown for Irishmen to(may the Lord have mercy on us all) inseminate negresses themselves and even name the HY after them. As detestable as it may sound, these men are providing a service and I would suggest paying as much as 3 times the price of a regular negro in similar condition.
