true because racism is a global system. It works for all people, people of color, all over the world. It also makes these people turn against each other. H 1 trying to be later than the next.

It is rare in the black neighborhood per capital. I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt. Why would you want to beleive such a thing in the first place?

well by me being black I have witnessed whitewashed black folks all the time. Don't pretend like there is no such thing. Some knowledge just comes from personal experience. It doesn't matter really what neighborhood whitewashed black people come from the FACT is plenty of them exist just like there are whitewashed Hispanics and Asians I have experienced all scenarios . You also don't have to give me the benefit of the doubt you have an opinion and so do I .

First, I'm not pretending there is no such thing.
Second, I never said it did matter.
Third, I know I don't have to give you the benefit of doubt, because you come off wrong anyway, when I was only trying to agree with you.

I'm afraid some of them do, for example Dick Gregory, one of the activist I heard break the term down several years ago. I heard him use it just the other day. I guess he didn't feel like breaking the term down, and just wanted to get to the point.
Well, one of the major tenets of public speaking is knowing your audience. Dick probably felt that the vast majority of the people who he stood before mostly had a limited understanding of "Uncle Tom" too, so he basically reduced himself DOWN in order to appeal to THEIR frequency of enlightenment.

I personally feel that Dick should have not done that because all he did was solidify the ignorance of certain members in his audience who don't know any better as opposed to challenging them.

Lol I wish. I'm young, but when you grow up in the deep south...a lot of old terms stick with you unfortunately. Plus that term makes me laugh everytime when I think of people still doing that even in 2013.
2013 or not, these are still our issues even in contemporary times. Feel free to laugh because of the somewhat ridiculousness of some of this sh!t, but this sh!t is far from funny when you really think about it.

Actually he used it on "The Power", the only black talk radio station on Surius XM. However Dick has been known to come out of left feild sometimes over the last several years. But to be honest, I believe most black activist still use "Uncle Tom" sometimes, when they get in a heated discussion, I'll even add Cornell West to the list. Until there's a serious push to get blacks from using that term, the way it was to get us to stop calling each other the N_word , then I expect that to continue every now and then, even from some of our most well respected civil rights activist. So in my opinion, I wouldn't quite look down on them, not this early in the game.

I agree..we shouldn't be so apt to judge our leaders from taking something that miniscule out of context especially when we already know they know better. Its just that ignorance abounds and we're living in times that we can't afford to perpetuate miseducation even in the slightest point.

But...its clear...the twisted interprestation of "Uncle Tom" is here to stay...just like the term "n!**a".

I hear a lot people say certain black folks are like that because they grew up around whites. First I don't buy that because as long as I've been alive, I never seen a neighborhood were if a black family moved in, a fair number of white folks don't move out over the years, and no other black families take their place.
If anything, these black folks should be dying to get with a brother or sister after having to see all those white faces, and feeling left out.
When I did this response, I had in mind a few jokes that Abdul Muhammad shared during one of his speeches I saw him give on the weekly NOI webcast, broadcasting from the NOI Headquarters in Chicago a few months ago. By the way, Abdul Muhammad is a speaker for the NOI, and he was born and raised in the Atlanta area.

In that speech , he joked about something I  rarely hear a brother talk about. He said he grew up as a child around white people and he went to a mostlly white school for a while. Then his family moved to a black neighbborhood, and he admitted he talked square and couldn't even relate to the word "booty", but all that changed.

The funny part was while he said he attended that white school, the only black people  he saw was him, his older brother, and the janitor. The temple almost fell out laughing. If that didn't remind me of when I first went to a mostly white elementary school before it integrated, than nothing did. Before that, the only blacks I remembered seeing was me, my older brother a grade higher than me, my older sister a grade higher than him, and the janitor named Mr. Charlie. However I do remember this very lightskinned girl in my class. But just moving out of the toughest ghetto in Washington DC, I thought she was white too, lol. One way or another, I could relate very well to what Abdul Muhammed was saying.

The other joke Adul Muhammad shared was when he told the temple that while living in that white neighborhood, he and his brother would actually get up extra early in the morning on trash day just to see the garbagemen, beçause that was the only chance they were going to get to waive at  some brothers in that neighborhood, lol. I can't quite relate to that 100%, because a year or two after we integrated my childhood neighborhood, our neighbors actually were our trashmen. These were a couple of older brothers who moved up the street. They went from bullying us to us waving at each other from the pickup truck.Anyway, Abdul Muhammad had the crowd trying not to bust out laughing on that joke too. If they weren't in the temple, I'm sure they would have.

I very seldom see a brother get up in front of a crowd that is mostly from the hood, in Chicago at that, and share his experiences living around white people, and have them cracking up. From looking at him and hearing him talk, you would never think he had a background às such. This took a lot of courage from Abdul Muhammad, and I can't help but admire him for it. I know there's probably a lot of brothers and sisters with backgrounds similar to his, but unfortunately they can't always share it, and I mean with some of the ones they think are their best friends. I learned that through experience.

<quoted text>No one really knows what it means to be "whitewashed".

It's simply a term used by the ignorant and less educated blacks to invalidate those of us who speak standard english, work for a living, or participate in activities that white people are known for participating in. Whitewashed is a term applied to label others for actually DOING something with our lives aside from breaking the law, smoking weed all day, or leaving children fatherless. Anything the common street negro doesn't do or understand is labeled "whitewashed". They do this, because they are quick to judge others and very slow to understand what it is they are judging or why, so they call people "whitewashed". When you call THEM something or label them, they immediately scream how unjust it is for you to do such a thing to a fellow black person. Only THEIR version of what should be black is relevant. Anything else is "whitewashed". There is a standard that all black people are supposed to conform to. When you refuse to heed this standard you are CAST OUT and labeled "whitewashed" or an Uncle Tom.

There! I said it.

Every time there is a thread that says something negative about White folks they jump in to defend the white people, and make disparaging remarks about other Blacks.

Merriam Webster dictionary defines white wash as: a white liquid mixture used for making surfaces (such as walls or fences) whiter.: a planned effort to hide a dishonest, immoral, or illegal act or situation.: a defeat in a game or contest in which the loser does not score any points.
Urban Dictionary: Someone who is looked at as leaving behind or neglecting their culture and assimilating to a white, western culture.
Note that the first definition is fact; the second is an opinion about or judgement of others.

No one really knows what it means to be "whitewashed".
There! I said it.
You a great example of what an Uncle Tom is. You described it (yourself) beautifully. Its unfortunate but people like you make the problem worse.

This is a serious question. No jokes please. What are the signs of someone being white washed because I'm finding it hard to understand what it is to be "white" and what it is to be "black" so to speak.
To AAA,
Please don't hound posting on the African American forum. I'm aiming my question at African Americans and to be honest, I don't need a visa to comment here
I'm Hispanic and considered whitewashed because I don't listen to "Latin" music nor do I dance to it. It just doesn't appeal to me, yet when I visited Spain I Loved the music! Something about it was musical and not vulgar. Anyway, I like classical music, jazz, musicals, old black and white movies. Etc. Guess what? I learned it from my grandmother and mother who grew up in Central America. I come from a family who expands their horizons. We don't live in a bubble. I take what I like from different cultures. So I pronounce burrito like a non-Hispanic person would pronounce it, but that's when I'm speaking English, when I speak Spanosh I pronounce it in Spanish. Gees! I'm also very animate about speaking Spanish correctly. Therefore, I don't look down on my culture, although I am blessed to know my different backgrounds. I am from Central America and am a descendant of Greek, French, Spanish, Scotish, and Italians. That's nice that I know it. It doesn't change who I am. I hav acclimated to the culture in the US. If I lived in Japan it would make sense to acclimate to the Japanese way of life. That doesn't mean you look down on your background. No way! But just because a person is Hispanic, black, Asian, White, Any type of Indian from the Americas, European, Middle Eastern, etc... does not mean you HAVE to like the music, food, way off life, mannerisms etc of the place you were born in or the culture you were born into. And no one should feel superior or less than anybody. I have never felt out of place for being a minority in a country that's not my native country because the world is a huge place in comparison to where I live. Maybe that's just me. It's about finding a balance. Hope as time has passed she doesn't feel bad about that comment. It means different things to different people. If whitewashed means I have made the USA culture a part of me, yes that's true. Like I said, I take what I like from different cultures. The culture, race, country, ethnicity doesn't define who I am. I define who I am.

Period. In your case, you are African American and let who you are define who you are and what you are like just like me. Not others and not the culture. If it isn't harmful why not make it your own.
